Platinum Edition questions

Post by Kevinf »

Hey I'm new here but have a serious question. I have a chance to buy a platinum edition with 196,000 miles on it. If this was any 850 I would buy it quick for the price he wants, but what I need to know is... are they more expensive to keep going. Will this just be a money pit? I had a 1995 850 GLT that I got well over 350,000 miles out of, could I expect the same from this car? Thanks!

It's just another 850 maintenance wise, strictly paint and equipment that differ.
And welcome to MVS!
Current Volvos:
1998 V70 T5, 112k sat 5 years, still in mechanical coma (finally at the top of the pile )
2004 XC90 T6 AWD: 186k, 60 on transaxle ( traded in )
1998 POS70 N/A: DD/training aid, 236k but really about 240k, I think...ABS module( passed on to son who sold it)

Thanks, another guy said the same on reddit. I guess I'll be going for a test drive this weekend if it's still there. I'll post pics if I get it.

To be correct it needs to have the Persus wheels.

As was said, the Platinum Edition was an appearance package that had every bell and whistle on the option sheet except the R ECU. It has all of the same problems that all 850s have but nothing unique to the Platinum itself unless it gets clobbered. Matching the paint and getting it right is tough.

That is to say, the Platinum will bleed you to death like any other Volvo, you will just look better bleeding out.

Enjoy it and GLWS or GLWB?

It is turbo so you will need to service turbo related stuff which is worth it to me.

Right - OP, there will be several engine bay differences from your 1995 GLT, which was not a turbo. With the turbo the engine bay is more crowded, there are some additional maintenance items, more pesky little oil leaks, overall a fair bit more nagging but a much more fun car to drive. There are no big ticket repair items on the turbo, the turbo itself is super hardy, but you'll probably have to change the turbo coolant hoses and oil drain gasket right away.

Can you tell a Platinum by the VIN? The car I just bought is a opalescent white 1996 850 Turbo, Rear spoiler, 2.3L turbo, every conceivable option there is including premium sound and power antenna. Both seats are power, trip comp, fogs, sunroof, Persus wheels [or as close as I can figure from online pics]. Thanks
David
