Use a stethoscope headset - does the engine still sound healthy?

Post by SvenGWK »

You can find a lot of videos on YouTube where people ask if their engine sounds good. The audio recording is usually done with the normal smartphone microphone and the origin of some noises cannot be determined later in the video.
I made a little experiment with a headset today and I think it worked quite well.
You can even hear the sound change towards the end of the video when I opened the oil cap. ;-)
The video was suddenly turned upside down after the upload and is distorted, but in this case the sound is the most important thing.
The clacking noise are apparently the hydraulic lifters (engine was warm...). Most of the old Volvo engines I found on the web sound like this. Should I be worried about this or other noises from my engine?

Thats the best sound quality I have heard on a Volvo Engine!!

All those sounds don't sound bad to me - a lot like mine, at least.

Brilliant idea. I'm going to try this to isolate an annoying whining my engine is doing that hasn't changed since I got the car. I'm starting to think PCV..

I agree it sounds quite normal. Both lifters and injectors tick a bit.

And the ticks are really amplified when you use a microphone or stethoscope, too.

Thanks guys, i'll see if the noise can be isolated better. I now think the injectors are also responsible for this ticking.
I found an example with a problematic lifter (not my car!):

Same engine, and it also has this high ticking - but an additional "evil" noise.
Strangely enough, the lifter noise has disappeared on its own at the end.

Are you searching for a headset which you can use across several gaming devices at a time?

Sounds normal to me.

In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

Sounds normal to me as well. Some whiteblock engines use solid lifters others use hydraulic. June
