Hey all,
I've been using this site for a long time now (since i got my 850) and greatly appreciate all its taught me about working on cars. Ok, so some background. I set out to replace the steering rack for my 1993 850 GLT and have ran into a bit of a headache.
Ill preface with saying that I gave up on replacing the steering rack (too many bolts rusted to all hell, cutting would be involved, and the rack wasn't in dire need of being replaced in the first place so i said eff it). With that said, I did get to the point where I jacked up the engine in preparation of removing the steering rack, and my problem now is I cant seem to get the motor seated properly.
To jack up the engine, I removed the bolt holding in the front hydraulic mount from the bottom, removed the bolts connecting the transmission torque mount to the subframe, removed the bolts on the passenger side motor mount under the crankshaft, the bolt holding in the top motor torque mount, and finally the nut on the rear hydraulic mount. I jacked the engine up, then when I tried to set it back down I realized it wasn't seated properly, so I figured I'd have to wrestle with it. So a good 30 mins after trying to wrestle it in place with no progress, I tried to determine why it didn't want to move to seat on the rear hydraulic mount stud. I crawled under the car and noticed that, even with the engine jacked up, it is still resting on the rear hydraulic mount stud (about half an inch away from the hole its supposed to go through). I assume this might be because I haven't detached everything I need to, but after doing a hefty bit of research I cant for the life of me figure out why, even after being jacked up, the engine is still resting on the rear mount stud.
It is very frustrating, because when I try to move the engine, all it's doing is wiggling the mount with it and I get nowhere. I'm afraid to jack the engine up more, as I feel i'm jacking it as high as I can safely (1.5-2 in) and more than I would think I would need to to lift the motor from resting off the motor mount stud. Any help would be appreciated, and I can post pictures if need be. Thanks for any and all help, much love from Indiana.

See if you can get a helper to rock the motor towards the front of the vehicle - or add another 2x4 under the motor/tranny to get extra travel.

Be careful not to jack the engine to high as you can damage the drive axles. Is the engine rear mount loose both ends? Also the rear mount if I recall has a locating tab it needs to sit into the upper end of the mount upper bracket.

I forgot about that tab and Neil's correct. You'd have precisely that problem!

Neil,
Yes, i am cautious not to jack it up too high, would rather not have to replace my axles too! The rear mount is only loose on top, where it connects to the engine, it is still connected with the bolt to the steering rack assembly. Can you elaborate on the locating tab you mentioned? Is it separate from the stud? Thanks,
Sean

On the top plate that the top stud is attached to. As everyone should have, it just so happens I have a rear mount for a S60/V70R P2 sitting on my desk (doesn't everyone?) so attached below are pictures of the locating pin/tab. Release the lower nut to allow it to move and tilt/align the tab in the locating hole in the top mounting bracket.
Hope this helps.
