06 XC70 front rotor size?

Post by scot850 »

I've written previously about the crap OE Volvo brake life on this car (3 sets of front and a machining/turning and 2 sets of rears and a machine/turn) in about 37,000 miles (60kkm).

Looking at replacement brake options on FCP website shows there would appear to be 3 rotor diameters available (286mm, 305mm and 320mm). Naturally this car has the smallest (maybe under-braked = low lifespan). Can you do like on the P80's and alter the brake caliper mounting bracket and flexi-pipe and then fit the larger rotor/pad option? Do you need to change the calipers also?

We have 16" rims which I am not going to replace as both sets have been re-finished and new tires are on the way for the summers.

Has anyone done this or is it even possible?

Thanks,

Neil.

You just need the mounting bracket and you're good to go. Though I wouldn't expect too much of an increase in brake life. It's more about marginally higher heat capacity than anything else.

Thanks Rattnalle. Just realised this idiot managed to post in the wrong section so I will re-do this in the P2 section. Thanks for your reply. I did find that no need to replace the flexi-pipe. These will fit inside a 16" wheel (the 305mm rotors and caliper/brackets that is).

Our friend Rattnalle from Sweden replied that you only need to change the brackets, and then fit the larger rotors. No change needed to the flexi-pipe. He also said that other than better heat dissipation there is no real improvement in braking or lifespan. I am surprised at that as why does everyone want to up-size P80 brake rotors then? Surely working at a wider (10mm wider) diameter even using the same caliper and brake pad will give greater braking force and so no need to jump on the brakes as hard, and with better heat transfer, will that not reduce the brake force required and reduce brake wear?

Only part of the question not answered is will these still fit inside the 16" wheels as I don't plan to change those.

Thanks,

Neil.
