In another thread I just posted, I mentioned that my 1999 Volvo S70 5 speed brushed up against the curb.
As part of that damage, the inner CV joint came apart.
Below are pictures of the damage. I am new to the idea of repairing CV joints so I wanted to ask if they are even repairable when they are pulled apart by force like this.
If these pictures aren't enough to determine if I can rebuild this, please let me know and I'll shoot more.
I have the inner part of the driveshaft out as well but I haven't cleaned that out and figured out what's in that mess.
Thanks
Andy
How it looked before taking it apart.
End. Did this slip? Should end of shaft be flush?
Side: note exposed splines. Should the "knukle" ride lower?
Can this CV joint be rebuilt?

I would say no as there is damage to the edges of the hollows the ball bearings fit into. You can see the damage to the edges in the bottom (last) picture. Good chance it is bent. Maybe call Erie Vo-Vo and see if they have a good replacement. They should have a Volvo axle and they warrant their parts for life. I bought an axle for my 5 speed auto V70 base last year and it was about $125 + Shipping. I'd rather use a good used Volvo axle over an unknown 'new' build.

Get all that grease off it , and inspect the metal for cracks. The CV should be down on the splines and held in by a circlip. If there’s no cracks I would run it, after replacing the boot and grease you will have saved about half the cost of a good used. The two hour shift of labor to clean, check, and reboot I value at $50 plus $10shop fee

Hi Folks,
Thanks for the replies. As an update, I did get everything cleaned out and as luck would have it, I still have all 6 balls and the metal bearing cage intact. I was worried that the violence required to rip it apart may have sent vital parts all over the place. I was getting ready to drive out to the spot of the accident to look for parts if need be.
I plan on rebuilding it if for no other purpose than get my car running for the short term. In my other thread on this incident, I mentioned that there may be damage to the control arm brackets. My mechanic is about 1 mile away and I feel confident that I can drive it there once get the CV joint back in.
This will be a new one for me. I've never rebuilt these things.
If the joint doesn't last, I don't think it's a big deal. This experience has shown me that this job of getting the axles shaft out is pretty easy.
Thanks again.
Andy
[Edited to clear up the last sentence around what is "pretty easy". ]

Oh.. One more question.
Is it standard procedure to replace the seal the drive axle slides into in the transmission? Mine is not/was not leaking at all but I didn't know if this was a standard replacement item. It looks pretty easy. I wonder if it falls into the category of "might as well replace it if you're in there..."
Thanks

Im from the
"Leave it alone if it isnt leaking" school.
IF the cage survived that impact your axle is in good shape. I broke a cage just drifting off the shaft out of rusty hub, so they are pretty fragile with respect to end impact.
