Hello,
I'm the owner of an 850 with a oil pan that is currently leaking quite freely. The vehicle is still in daily use, but is marking it's territory a bit too much for my liking and those who I visit. I was told by a mechanic that it has a hole worn through it from a cable underneath. I had it JB welded last fall, but the patch has failed and they don't believe patching it with JB weld or similar will last for long. They've suggested buying a new pan or having the current one welded upon removal. Both options cost more than I'd like to spend on a vehicle of this age and worth. If I could source a cheap pan I might be inclined to install it and get a another year out of the car. If anybody has any lines on a cheap pan in the Calgary, Alberta area I'd be interested in speaking with you.
Thanks for your time,
Mike

The bottom end crankcase carrier is the same as a 20 valve so your options are not as limited. Any 20 valve pan will suffice.

What cable is there that runs under the pan that rubs on it? Not had a manual trans in years but trying to figure what would cause this issue.
Pick n Pull in Calgary doesn't have any 850's in either just now, but there are a couple of V/S 70's at 52nd St site, and a 98 at the Barlow trail site, but from Vida there are 2 types of oil pan shown. Engine #'s up to 374782 use one listed as oil sump WITHOUT oil lever sensor (Part # 9135282) and oil sump WITH oil lever sensor for engines # 374783 - up (Part # 9135282 or 1271604

The other option is there are several aluminum welding shops in Calgary. If you can remove the pan, it should be able to be welded.

I'm pretty certain the power steering hard line can chafe the sump. I recall bending mine out of the sump's way when we owned our 850

The power steering hardline is what I believe is rubbing as well.
Welding it was briefly discussed, but at the time seemed like an expensive option.
Valentine Volvo parts says any pan from 94'-99' will fit. I will look up some tutorials and see how feasible it is to pull a pan at one of the pick and pull yards here.
My last option is to just continue driving it until I can find another MT station wagon. Preferably a 2000's era V70.
Thanks for the help guys,
Mike

Like precopster says, careful bending of the pipe may relieve the issue or using a small sticky felt pad to separate the 2 parts may reduce the issue reoccuring, but you could always try the JB weld type products again. There are a few which work with oil and gasoline that could work. Many years ago (maybe 30) I had a BMW which a main dealer managed to crack the fuel bowl on the carburetor. As a replacement was 500 UK pounds in the early 80's I couldn't afford a new one and they refused liability (the days before I knew to kick their asses). I glued it with a fuel resistant epoxy and ran it like that for maybe 3+ years before having the money to fit another used carb. So maybe that will work for you too based on your planned length of ownership.
