2004 S60 - New Remote Key

Post by y2kdad »

Hi,

Just purchased a used 2004 S60. It only comes with one master key w/remote. What is the best way to obtain another key w/remote? I've seen online aftermarket retailers who will sell me the key/remote, but do I need to take it to a dealership for programming? I've heard that can be more expensive.

Will a locksmith be able to program it?

Thanks

All in, a remote and fob on a P2 Car will cost $3-400

The car and the new key need to be present together with someone with VIDA, software, to marry them

Thank you for the reply. What about purchasing an after-market key and FOB and then getting that programmed? I see that some keys are available with transponder for about $50

You run the risk of the dealer telling you they are unable to program the key you bring in which can happen on flea-bay stuff.

There is some limit to how many keys can be programmed which you don't know until you take it in.

If you have non-working parts of your immob system, or fault codes in the alarm, VIDA won't let you program keys and/or fobs

If you are getting the impression Im a bit cynical about this...you are right.

I have one fob for my 2005 and just had three keys without Fobs made for about $150 when I needed other VIDA type work done.

Dealer parts guy told me some owners remove the security chip and attach it to the steering column area, under the plastic cover . Then any key copy will work. You lose some security features.
My car is 2004, no-one is likely to steal it.

- Old topic search forum for answers.

- Cheapest is to buy a key without remote, even so, it will cost some $210 ($70 for the key, $70 for the license and $70 for programming fees).

Thanks for all the replies! I’ll need to settle for the valet key option. Considering this is a 14-year old car, it would be hard to justify the expense for a new remote. I called the dealership yesterday and they quoted me $215 for the valet key. :(

Dealership south of Boston , norwood, said $92 to cut a new blank, no remote.

The valet key needs to be mechanically cut and still married to the ECU in VIDA

If this helps someone, let me publish some information:
The folding key consists of two parts, one part is designed to unlock the immobilizer (this is a metal blade for the ignition lock and a chip in the head of the key), the second part is designed to work with the central locking of the doors and alarm (this part with buttons). It is necessary to program each part independently of each other.
To program the immobilizer successfully, it is necessary to have a key with a unlocked or new chip inside the head part of the key. There are solutions for unlock some used chips actually. But the same time you can't use used cuted metal blade for your original ignition.
To program the remote control into the car, a special code is required. You can find on the eBay a lot of lots, where you can buy used remote controls without this code, these remotes can not be programmed into the car by dealer methods. But there are also offers of remotes with code. The dealer can program such remotes. But, keep in mind also that there are two types of remotes with the code - Chinese and original. You can see the difference only if you open the remote. According to reviews, Chinese remotes work about one year, after which they often break down.
On eBay sometimes there are solutions where guys sell keys with used original remote control part (+barcode) and new head part (new metal blade and new immo chip). Follow for feedbacks before buy any keys on eBay.
