Clutch knowledge sought-

Post by Lineman1954 »

I come hat in hand seeking wisdom from Volvo sage, engine and clutch are sitting by awaiting some clarity- my original clutch and pressure plate (Sachs I believe) are removed, the new Luk (with a narrower friction surface) is prepared for installation- ONE snafu- the car came with what appears to be a solid steel bushing as a pilot, the Luk kit came with a actual roller bearing.....how could the transmission pilot shaft ever have worked without a bearing ? it appears to have made some contact with it by the witness marks.... the bearing makes all the sense in the world, in the 70's all my clutch changes had a solid bush located in the crank where the tapered snout would engage in neutral.....there sure isnt a taper on this splined snout....is this right ? am I the first to scratch his head and say "how did this work " ?...is this NEW actual roller bearing an upgrade to a flawed original design ? Any thoughts / insight please ?

Pilot bearing is not needed on a 850, even though there is part number for it. I wouldn't install it.

I don't recall that the transmission input shaft had any kind of pilot bearing or bushing on the end when I changed the clutch on my '94. In theory it really shouldn't be necessary so long as the bearing on the input to the transmission is good. I bought a Sachs clutch kit and it did not come with any bearings other than the throwout bearing assembly. I also don't recall any kind of bushing on the end of the transmission shaft unless it was there and just stuck in the end of the engine crankshaft and I never saw it.

If the bearing is the same size as the steel bushing and they will interchange I would go ahead and swap them out since it certainly couldn't hurt anything.
