Lifter Noise
Lifter Noise
Hello. I'm creating this thread in hopes that someone may help. Long story short. I have been researching solutions for lifter tap or tick. My 2002 S40 has it at 125k+ miles and I would like to get rid of it if at all possible. It seems to be a bit much for the mileage. I was considering some Seafoam in the crank case, but before I head that direction, I would like further input. It is a turbo 1.9T and is driven sort of hard at times. Any ideas?

If lifter means valves....then you probably just need a valve adjustment. My truck has that tick tick tick noise as well right now and I'll probably end having the same thing done.

Are you sure it is the lifters ticking and not the injectors?
I've gone "old school" on some occasions and added a pint of ATF to the crankcase 500 miles before an oil change to clean the inside of the engine. It's my understanding that ATF has a high detergent quality.
Don't know if it would do anything to address noisy lifters, but it did clean up under the oil fill cap pretty well.
I've never adjusted the valves on my S40 (219K) or 850 (258K). I think IPD rents out a kit that includes the necessary shims.

I did a little more digging and apparently the 02 S40 motor is solid lifter setup. To solve this issue would be to measure clearances and order new tappets accordingly. Aka valvetrain adjustment.
I might recheck the noise today, but I'm just about positive it's partially valvetrain noise. A little passage cleanout would be nice anyways I suppose. Do you think ATF would be safe in a turbo car? Say, half a quart? Also, should I use a specific type?
Thanks.

I can only tell you that I've used this method on my 2001 S40 and 1995 850T (both turbocharged cars) numerous times and haven't had any problem after. I don't think I would do it at every oil change, but I am comfortable with the 3-4 times that I've done it on these cars when they had close/over 200,000 miles.
I think I used Dexron 4/Mercon , but I suspect any ATF would be ok.
You may also consider using a synthetic or synthetic-blend oil in the future to control sludge build-up.
