Am I the only one ?

Post by Lineman1954 »

well, my beautiful white with blue leather interior 850 just gave me a new issue- I think I drove 35 miles since I put in all new wheel bearings, clutch and pressure plate with throwout- new struts complete- rear shocks, snubbers and springs, fuel filter, battery, serp. belt ....and... rear main seal. I really struggled with this, it was bone dry, but most sites say "hey, as long as your in there, might as well".so I did- this isn't my first RMS, and I changed all the other seals on the gear box while at it, all good- and while I had the engine out I cleaned the PCV ensemble that was all clear, and removed the flame arrestor for good measure. the seal I put in is a CORTECO, has any one else had a similar experience ?..looks like Im about to pull the whole thing again..... :(

First off, good job on taking care of all those pesky maintenance items. I'm getting ready to do clutch and RMS this month. However, you are not clear about exactly what is wrong? I'm assuming you developed an oil leak after all of this maintenance?

Im guessing the RMS is leaking?

Ouch. Thats a good seal if I remember, but worth researching again.

yes, put the seal in before the flywheel came back from the resurfacer....put it in gently and evenly all the way around, didnt leak before but does now. got to yank it out, dont trust that liquid stop leak voodoo

They can be a devil to get right. I had the dealer do it and it leaked again, as did the replaced front crank seal, and the auto trans front seal. To add to that my car is an AWD and the angle gear rear seal also leaked after a new seal. All seals were Volvo OE and Volvo mechanic fitted.

The leak may not be the RMS. Did you replace the rear cam seals? If they leak the oil drains downwards into the bell housing. It could also be the front seal on the trans and nothing to do with what you did directly.

What I was trying to make a point of is it may not be anything you have repaired but a new 'issue'.

There are two dangers to installing any seal. 1) the lip gets nicked by a sharp edge at initial install. Some use a plastic bottle cut to fit over the shaft and then slide it on, removing once it passes the sharp edges. (some seals come with a plastic tool for this). 2) The other danger of any seal replacement is the lip curling. I like to take a thin piece of plastic bottle, sand the edges smooth (oil it) and run it around the shaft/seal lip to make sure the seal lip is not curled before tapping it home.

I have not had luck with the plastic tool that comes with some seals preventing lip curling as the ones I have received don't go in far enough.

I have avoided disaster with this method once finding the lip had curled. If you use this approach you have to pay attention to damaging the lip (reason to oil and smooth plastic edge) and do it early enough where the lip curl doesn't cause a bad lip crease.

Thank You Abscate,I fled that zone after 60 years of winters and 30 years of powerline work, glad to be HERE !- Scot, it was bone dry before I did the "might as well change it while your there thing"..and SuperHerman, thanks for that insightful info, I used a small block of southern yellow pine to walk the seal evenly around before evenly setting it even with block casting...its not the factory tool, but used this method a dozen times with good luck...AND ! the seal is flared evenly outward that little bit all around the crank.....should that lip on the crank face be flared in ?....is ther an actual tool I can buy for this ? and I didnt knick the crank face it was perfect .. kind of anxious to see what the issue was here in a way,and its not the cam seals.
