Timing Belt Replacement

Post by bobsnow100 »

I just purchased a used 2001 xc70 . It is due for a timing belt replacement. I have changed them on a 850 before and was wondering if it is the same process. Also, is it recommended to change any other of the other parts, like the tensioner, etc. during this process
Thanks

Your car has the manual tensioner and not the auto tensioner (like what was on your 850). This tensioner in your '01 is changed out with every TB change, but the TB itself is changed every 105k miles, thus the trade off. The setting of the tensioner is specific to the ambient temperature when you change it, so it can get a bit tricky. Everything else is basically the same. With a post-'98 FWD Volvo I would definitely get a cam=gear locking device and set the tensioner pin EXACTLY like the one that came out of your car. Others will give their experiences with this TB change. Frankly, I've never done one with the mechanical piece, so am only posting what I've heard others saying.

Thanks MIJ for all the good info.
One question I have from your response is if the cam locking tool the same one used on my 850 ?, reason why I ask is because I had made one before for the 850 cams to lock them at once the engine was at TDC.
Also is the engine crankshaft mark the same on the crank pulley as the 850?

The stuff you suspect is the same, including the camshaft locking devise you made. It would be good to review how to set the tensioner before you put it in. I can dig up a diagram for you if you wish.

Thanks MIJ, If you can let me know how to set the tensioner, I would appreciate it very much. I am familiar with the hydrolic type tensioner on my 850 but not the manual one that your speaking of for the xc 70.
Do you know where to get a repair manual for this vehicle?I always like to maintain and repair my own cars but as we know you need specs, torque requirements, directions, etc.
Thanks so much

A usuable copy of VADIS has the information in it that I find and post sometimes. You can find a VADIS DVD disc on eBay for under $50 usually. In the meantime, I hope this helps you:

Changed it out .Thanks MIJ. No problems. Took about 1 1/2 hours. When I bought the belt and tensioner at the volvo dealer ,I talked to the mechanic and he said you actually don't need too lock the cams, just don't move anything once the belt is off. I put the engine at TDC and just got some typewriter white out and marked up the intake and exhaust cams and anything else . The belt will slip off the crankshaft, the same way the 850 does. Takes some finagling but you can get it off. The mechanic said to line up the mark on the tensioner "between the field goals" same as the picture MIJ had above.
Over all it was easier than the 850

Hello,
I am helping out a friend with his 1999 V70 XC Cross Country. His timing belt tensioner disinigrated while he was cruzin down the interstate. As i pulled off the head, every valve was bent. I'm now ready to install everything, however, when pulling off the sprocket for the exhaust cam, i neglected to mark the bolts and and position of the sprocket on the cam. I need to know if there is a way to align the sprocket in relation to the cam lobes.

Thanks.
