1998 V70 will not start - apparently no fuel.

Post by Eddystone »

I did a search, and it came up with too many solutions for too many models, so, new thread.

Work with me, guys!

98 V70 non-turbo. Car has run flawlessly up until now. Drove car about five miles and parked it. When I came out, it would fire but acted as if it was running on two cylinders and died. Did this about four times, then just spins on starter with no ignition at all. Took cap off of fuel rail and pushed release valve in. No pressure and no fuel came out. All fuses good.

Suspect 1: Fuel pump relay. Starting to identify which one that is. Can you point me right to it? Is there another relay you can swap in? I may have a spare one kicking around.

Suspect 2: Bad fuel pump. I'm not there yet.

In general car is very well cared for. Clean under the hood and many new parts. I've had it for the past year. 154k miles.

Thank you @abscate ! Found the info where you led me, tested with paper clip. Engine starts right up. I'm skilled at replacing electronic components and soldering, but Radio Shack is no more. I have lots of capacitors around but I don't hold out much hope of finding and identifying the right ones.

I ended up buying one of these to get back on the road:

Intermotor Fuel Injection Relay Part # R6024

They had it in stock at Advance Auto parts priced at $52 and I got it for $42. I'm going to order the capacitors for the Volvo part and probably swap it back in. The original was clean as a whistle inside with no evidence of problems with the caps (no leakage), but it didn't work! ;-) There is also a decent pic-a-part just north of Harleysville, PA.

Now I have to look for the evaporative emissions leak. I looked at the line that goes past the fuel filter. It seemed spongy but intact. I need to get that fixed to pass inspection.

The capacitors are 22 uF and 100 uF electrolytics (one each). 25 Volt or greater but you have to watch the diameter on the higher voltage ratings.

Any good electronics supply house should have them if you have one locally. You can always get them through places like Digikey or Mouser but the freight eats you alive.

I live just outside of Philadelphia, and all of the electronic supply houses seem to be gone.

Wisdom requires knowledge as a prerequisite, but knowledge can be developed due to a lack of wisdom.
In order to learn how to fix something, you must first learn how to break it.

I had good luck buying the fuel pump relay capacitors from DigiKey. For small orders they will ship good old USPS for a reasonable price (I think it was $2 or $3 for postage).
When I replaced my capacitors, I also noticed that the solder joint between the circuit board and one of the relay pins was cracked. You might want to inspect yours for this type of damage and repair if needed.
