Timing belt replacement 2007 v70, low mileage oil change interval
Have above 5 cylinder 2.4 l with 80,500 miles. Only repair issue in nearly 12 years was battery replacement! From the owners manual, I cannot tell when the timing belt needs replacement, or whether it does at all. Any advice?

If you consider keeping the car for another few years, it is the time to replace it. The reason is the age of the car, not the miles.
I'd recommend buying online (Fcp, Ipd) a Continental kit for the belt, but without the water pump which lasts 200000 miles on this engine.
May as well inspect the serpentine belt and pulleys while there, and replace the thermostat and PCV system. Just my opinion about these extra repairs.

I just replaced my TB with 12 years and 110K on it.
Info below:
viewtopic.php?f=10&t=83521
Since your car is 2007 V70 with 80K, I'd wait until 12-13 years and 100K to do the TB (see link above for detail where to buy parts).
The WP can wait until 180K miles.

Depending on your Vin, some Volvos are 15 year/150k mile TB replacements.
You should replace in the next year or so, no rush

Your belt is old - it is not just about miles. The best thing to do is to take off the timing belt inspection cover and look at the condition of the belt. It is two tabs and two torx bolts (takes longer to find the tools and pull the hood up) - if you cannot do it bring it to a mechanic and have them look at it and look at it yourself.
I pulled the cover of my XC90, with a 5 year old dealer installed belt and found it cracking. I changed it out even though technically it was good for another 70k plus miles. Not worth the risk.
So - you can blindly rely on recommendations or you can take a close look and confirm. If it is in great condition go by the recommendations and take a look every six months or so to make sure.

Thanks to all for the advice above. I think I will ask my mechanic to inspect the belt.
I previously broke timing belts in a Volvo 240 and a Mazda 929. The engine designs were such that no damage was done, so it was mainly a matter of getting a tow and losing use of car for awhile. Will a broken belt in the v70 cause catastrophic damage?

It will destroy the engine enough that it's probably not worth repairing the car.
The normal interval for your year is 10 years or 180' km over here. In your case time. Will be the deciding factor. Personally I'd change it, it's not expensive enough to risk the engine over. Pretty much every other piece of maintenance can be put off with minor risks but not this.

All the white block 5 cylinder engines are “ interference engines” which means if the camshafts and crankshaft losecrelationship with each other the valves hit the pistons and bend. This is a $1000-2000 dollar job to put right vs a $500 dollar timing belt job. Mechanics are good at mushrooming your timing belt job to a $1000 job when done.Bobhall wrote: ↑21 Jul 2018, 04:21 Thanks to all for the advice above. I’m a risk taker. I drove my 99 on its OEM tim8ng belt to 140k miles and 12 years. I gathered some data here and am fairly comfortable reporting that timing belt mtbf is something like 150 k miles if it isn’t oil soaked.
Inspect now for oil, post pictures of any cracking.
Best value is to take the time now to learn the job and do it yourself for $200 and spend the $800 on SWMBO
We’ve got some good DIY guys in NJ I bet who would guide you through it, too.

10 years seems like a lot to me for a rubber belt (exposed to extremely high temperatures and activity), that just happens to hold the engine together. I'd replace it now!
