We have had an intermittent problem with the blower speed control. It gets stuck either on low or on high, but after you play with the dial and the car runs for a bit, the problem resolves itself...until last weekend.
I get in the car and the fan will not increase speed. It was hot and I wanted A/C, so I turned the temp to low and hit the "auto" button. Now its stuck on high with not indicator lights on the fan. Up until recently I assumed I had an issue with the blower motor resistor but there are no speed indicator lights illuminated over the fan speed button regardless if its in manual mode or auto now. I know the indicator lights turn off when you select auto, so I am not sure if I have a problem beyond my blower motor resistor.
Also, I assume the resistor is easy to switch out once the fan is out? The fan is not noisy or squeaky at all, so I do not feel the need to replace it...its a lot cheaper just to replace the resistor.

Once the blower is removed, undo the two bottom torx screws that have a rubber washer, pull the housing gently off the motor, then you access the two regulator screws. A used regulator is quite cheap off Ebay
I believe you may as well undo the regulator connector and plug it into a spare regulator, without removing the cabin blower from it's position.
Not sure if this is related with the led lights on the knob, though. Wait to see what the others will say
