I am trying to help a friend with his Volvo. At the bottom of the air intake hose there are two vacuum lines one about 3/8" and then one about 1/8" that is hard plastic. It has been cut/broken off. I can not find where the other end goes. The car will idle for about 45 seconds then die. If somebody can tell me where this goes I would be most grateful. In the pic the firewall is to the right and the front of the car to the left. Thank you!

That looks like the hard vacuum line on the PCV. The hose runs up in front of the engine under the intake manifold.
There are multiple vacuum and cooling connections on this hose so it’s a big job to replace.

+1. It is part of the PCV system. Is that not the hose that runs to the RH end of the intake manifold?

Thank you for the replies. Neil do you mean the passenger side of the engine? I normally tinker with older Miatas, this guy is a whole other beast! If anybody could post a pic that would be great! Thanks everyone!

Yes passenger side on the end of the inlet manifold there is a nipple that should have a pipe connected to it.

If you check this link you can see the pipe as part of the PCV/crank breather system. The remaining pipe end you have is the LH end of the pipe you see in the picture. The other end runs along the underside of the intake manifold and then connects to the RH end/passenger side of the intake manifold.

I believe the diagram is incorrect but been a while since I worked on this engine. In your 2nd picture, look on the left side where the thermostat housing is beside the power steering pump. Underneath the the radiator pipe on the end of the intake manifold there should be a nipple for the pipe to connect to.
The diagram which Rick gave is different as it would appear to show that the pipe connects to the vacuum tree which is the plastic tube just forward of the accelerator cable assembly. It has a few nipples on it for pipe connections. I have not seen that variant though but that does not mean it does not exist.
Neil.

The hoses in my first picture (above) are routed under the intake manifold. Look at it, the intake manifold is removed to show how the hoses are routed. Gunner, if you look up from under the car, you will see the hoses and oil trap. Hose #3 is not showen, it routes to the hose you see on the front of the intake manifold.
My second picture (above and below) is the same spot as Gunner's first picture. I pulled the third line to show him where the other two go. The larger plastic tube off the nipple does connect to the metal pipe. The image (above) is rotated 90° due to a quark in how this phpBB displays images taken on a (some?) cell phone(s). I processed the image in MS Paint, it displays correctly now.
