Built 98 S70 t5 - no oil pressure recovery questions

Post by Socalboostin »

Hello.

I have a 98 s70 t5m fully built with a 18t, 3" straight pipe, fmic, vast tuned, etc, etc. I have recently gone through the entire motor and all seals are new along with new head gasket, pcv, etc..

My car was running perfectly... and then i accidentally put my floor jack on the oil pan and sprung a leak. So i grabbed the spare pan i had on a siezed motor from a parts car, half ass cleaned it and swapped it out with my original that was leaking due to hole in it...

Well, cruising down the road all of a suddon later that evening i started to loose power and motor started to dog out a bit. I saw a flash of the oil pressure light and immediately killed the car and coasted to a clearing where i could investigate. Oil was fine exactly same spot on dipstick as before the trip and no oil on ground. Am attempt to start it and there was some serious lifter tick and almost a faint grinding so got towed home....

Next day i removed the pan again and found my pickup screen clogged with crud from the siezed motor the pan was sourced from. So obviously self inflected by not cleaning pan sufficiently. I cleamed the pan until it could be eaten from, got new o ring seals, cleaned the pickup screen and proceeded to reassemble.....

So now my current state has me unsure how to proceed. The car starts right up and the oil has great flow into the cams there no foam or bubbles present. But i cant seem to shake what i had assumed to be a serious lifter tick. Ive let the car idle for a few hours total so far and only attempted a drive less than 1 mile. None of the idling or short trip upthe road has really alleviated any of the noise which sounds to be coming from front of motor (passanger side..) behind the cam gears almost (another reason my assumption was lifters).

Sitting at idle it has a lifter tick for sure that comes and goes but once the throttle is bumped its almost more of a clatter than a tick. It does seem almost intermittent and if throttle blipped it fades for a few seconds before retuning. I have been reading though and am wondering if i have piston slap from a spun bearing. Is there a good way to test or determine if this is the case without having to drop the pan again and visually inspect the bearings? Compression is consistant wirh test results i had from my motor rebuild a few months ago ~150 +/- 2.

Any insight or suggestions will be greatly appreciated. Maybe i pony up and do the rod bearings now and then ill be set to up the tune if so desired later on..?? Thanks in advance

Have you tried going past 4000 rpm under load? My T5M has an occasional lifter tick after sitting fot a few weeks that is gone once I floor it. It is risky though in your situation becausr if oil starvation causes the noise you'll most likely do harm.

I have not, havent pushed any boost or left 2nd at all since i got it back together. But with that said..., thats about where im at for next steps.. mid rpms maybe 3rd gear for a fewand aee what happens. Whats the worst that can happen.. haha. At least these motors are cheap these days i suppose.

Yeah. They are dirt cheap and if you are as mechanically talented as it sounds swapping a motor shouldn't be too much of a deal for you

Thanks,, it wouldn't be my first t5 motor pull or reinstall. But hope it doesnt have to go that far as i was sure enjoying the recent build and being done wrenching for a little bit.

Well gave it a shot and chickened out. At about 3k rpms my knock alert flahser (courtsey of vast tune) started going off like crazy and it is deffinetly louder than a lifter tick in my opinion. Going to try to find a video with example of piston slap as ive never delt with jt before and cant be sure if thata what i hear or not, assuming it is

Agreed it is challanging to capture. i know what lifter tick sounds like. This is much more like top end clatter or knock. It is unpleasent, inconsistent, definitely tied to rpm.

With that said it was much worse when i first reatored oil preasure but after a bit of idling time it faded quite a bit. Still makes me uncomfortable even going half block from home as it is a bit nasty.

Im going to drop the pan again (3rd time is a charm or something like that i think) amd inspect the bearing caps for wear and signs of any damage.

In parallel i have already began searching for another B5234T3. Side question, dont suppose anyone knows of a list anywhere of other motor model numbers that would be compatible with my m56, td04hl-18t, and general 98 s70 t5 setup?

Thanks again

If you find the bearings in perfect condition one possibility might be a clogged oil galley from some crap that was in the replacement pan and got through the filter. For some reason, it seems like your top end is intermittently getting shorted of oil. If you suspect galley clogging, half a can of Seafoam in the crankcase might help clear it out.
