1995 Volvo 850 multiple error codes

Post by Addswing20 »

..hello guys/gals.....I have a 1995 Volvo 850 turbo! And I just bought it with 150 , 000 miles on it, ran fine for a 5 days ......and all the sudden , the car idles normal but as son as you try to drive it seems to go into limp mode( not sure if car is equipped with it or not).....but there multiple error codes showing up....most of them have somthing to due with temp sensor and blower Moyer grounded to earth and positive leads, tps to high, mas airflow detection, no coolant temp sensor reading .....there’alot more codes but all have something to do with grounding....and there’s also codes reading the o2 sensors preheating?

.....if any one has a idea on this plz let me no , ......and I’m not counting out the computer due to how many codes

Hi Addswing, welcome aboard!

It's not the computer. :D

Your car likely had several codes stored already when you got it. I'd suggest clearing all of the codes, every one of them, and see which ones come back. When they come back, post up those exact code numbers and we can help you.

How is the condition of the rubber vacuum lines on the engine? If any are crumbling and/or disconnected, that may be the problem. But always start with the actual codes.

Changed the old hoses....and cleared the codes ...check engine light didn’t come back on yet, but still not running right....it fires up nice , as soon as I touch the gas it hesitated and comes around to full throttle....only that stopped was the economy/sport/winter button stopped flashing, but still have the ac/rec ( ecc ) blinking still and the codes that were on there had - tps to high-mass air flow harness- no blower power- driver side fan seized and 6/7 grounded codes..........like somthing got wet or maybe the anti theft system is doing somthing? ...I’ve been locked out of my radio for 3 weeks now, and the radio is on off......and the batteries are dead in the 3 key-less remote thingies( not sure if that would cause somthing to ground out or not. ......and before this happened I changed the air hose leading from the front of the engine to the blow of valve on the turbo.
....but it only idles ( w/hesitation ) ....it won’t drive more than 10 mph down the road?

The following are unrelated to the engine problems but could be investigated separately:
- remote thingies
- blower motor (probably seized, needs replacing, you will want to pull it to check)
- radio block out (you need to get the radio code to fix this, check if the previous owners write it in the owner's manual or on top of the radio. it is a code of 4 numerals).
- blinking lights on the climate control (probably some of the vent flap motors it controls are bad, can be investigated)

I would next check, in order
(1) are all of the vacuum lines really hooked up properly ? see viewtopic.php?t=63615
(2) are the large hoses for the turbo air charge system all connected and none split open?
(3) unplug the MAF before you start it up, does it run better with the MAF unplugged? This will set an immediate MAF code that you can reset but the car should run completely normal with the MAF unplugged.

Also post up what codes you get as soon as they come on.

....found the problem with the grounded to earth codes.....water and bugs got to the connections on the blower fan.......took dash out and cleaned terminals, now the ecc lights are back to normal...I will put engine back together to start the car and see if that fixed anything else?......still having problems with engine running right thou.......

....and I changed all the hoses except one that goes into the throttle body...like under neath the air tree?...hard to get to but will try to change

Yeah, don't do that. Digital electronics don't like having things disconnected while they are running. It doesn't really tell you anything, and if you really get unlucky you can ruin some real expensive stuff that way.

Could be a bad MAF or a big leak of unmetered air.

To test it try this:
