1999 V70XC Rear brake caliper rebuild kit?

Post by ForestVolvo »

Hello,
I've done the searches and to no avail. I've seen the walk-thrus done by various members (a big thanks to CN90), but I'm still not seeing what I'm looking for in brake land. Ideally, I was hoping for some thread that had a complete run down of what calipers came on what vehicles and replacement parts for them.

Here is the set-up on my 99 V70 XC:
Front - 11" rotor, ATE caliper, single pot (piston), single bleeder, casting marks of "CN4" and "8247".

Rear - Girling caliper, single pot, double bleeder, casting marks of "CN4", "8286" and "1066-3".

CN90 had double pot rear calipers in his write-up.

I'm looking for rebuild kits for the rear caliper (preferably ATE/FTE products) and what I'm seeing doesn't make sense for my set-up. The kits I've seen that have the following component offerings are usually the low end of the market at the box stores.
I've seen kits that have 2 seals, 2 dust boots and 1 bleeder boot (which I'm assuming is for a dual pot single bleeder caliper).
I've seen kits that have 2 seals, 2 dust boots and 2 bleeder boots (which I'm assuming is for a dual pot double bleeder caliper).

Did I miss a thread that mentioned a cross-referenced kit that will work for what I have?
Did I miss a thread that mentioned that these calipers have no hope what so ever?

Thanks in advance.
Matt

It sounds like you have the single piston Girling? Rear caliper

I found the piston seals on Lisle for $10 but it looks like the piston and dust seals are NLA

The 99 and 00 xc's that I've seen at the junk yard all had ATE double piston, apparently the same caliper that's been used on the 850' since 93. If the mounting hardware is the same, you might be better off to source a pair of used ATE's and use as is or rebuild them.

A shop in Minneapolis that can rebuild any brake cylinder can probably help you with any parts you need. They are internationally known.

I live nearby and have used them a number of times.

So if you're stuck and want to get the whole rear system done completely and right so you won't need to deal with anything back there again, they would be worth a call. Don't call the retail counter, talk directly with the shop.

abscate & JimBee,
Thank you for your information.

Now that you post a screen shot of the Lisle part offering, I think I remember seeing that similar situation on volvopartswebstore. I think I went looking elsewhere for a complete kit. I suppose OEM something is better than a complete kit of subpar parts.

Also, here's hoping the dust boot is in adequate shape. Or if it isn't, get the cheapy kits and use the dust boot with the new OEM seal.

Onto JimBee's swap suggestion: it looks like the PnP would charge $30/side for caliper and bracket.

Does anyone know if that can be done plug-n-play style? Would I need the backing plate off the donor car too?
Would the flexible brake hoses from my car connect to the ATE calipers?
Are there any quirks with the ATE calipers?

Thanks,
Matt

PS - JimBee, thank you for the link to the local shop. As a machinist, I can appreciate the services they offer. I'll keep them in the back of my mind.
