96' 850 unidentifiable hose at air filter box

96' 850 unidentifiable hose at air filter box

I have to do a tune up on my 850 N/A and when I took the cover off the air filter box, one of the 2 little hoses in the back just came loose before I could see where it's attached to.

After looking around I cannot find a port or connector in the vicinity where it would plug into.
Can you guys help me out?

One sneaks around under the cold air snout and attachs to an air door, the other goes back to the intake manifold for vacuum.

Its the vacuum operated, thermo controlled air cleaner temperature regulation device, of course.

PS - I think that one is broken as it looks too short to attach to the air door. You can replace with flexible vacuum line, just route it nicely away from hot things and moving things (not too much moving on that side)

Looks like this is not as easy as I thought. There seems to be a nipple at the actuator on the air filter box where this hose is supposed to connect to.
But it seems that this nipple is broken off. Can you guys confirm this:

My guess is that that black pipe was just dangling there not connected to anything.
So my question is should I not worry about connecting this?
The car was running fine before and maybe I can buy some time until I find a good used box with a nipple.

Its a tiny vacuum leak that won't even code P0171.

You have enough pipe there to either one of three things....

- JB weld a piece of hose/pipe and then adapt it down to the vacuum line.

- Drill it out, tap it with a small brass nipple and do the same.

- ask me to check my 99 AIr cleaner to see if the air door is the same and I can pay you back for the free wheels you gave me.

That's a very kind offer, Steve.

But I think I will first try to cobble something up like you suggest. When I looked at this I didn't think there was enough "meat" to do anything with. But your JB weld idea sounds pretty good, didn't think of that.

I have a box with all kinds of small vacuum connectors laying around somewhere in the garage....

Dirk - it looks like you can snap the air box out and snap it back in - two clips.

The stock setup has a vacuum rubber L piece that changes the direction of the hose attachment orthogonal to the broken nipple on yours - see first picture. This isnt crucial.

Then you can repair yours on a cool evening while the RedSox choke the world series.

Thanks for posting the images. Now at least I know what this is supposed to look like.

You are right, it takes no time to take the box out at a later point. Right now I need the thing driving again ASAP :o
