Gear Selector Service Required, 2007 Volvo S40

Post by FSUDAL »

I own a 2007 Volvo S40 2.4L. I can put the car in reverse and back out but when I try to put the car in drive the shift knob gets stuck in neutral.

See video here

I can manually override it and shift it into drive and the car operates perfectly fine. When I try to put it from drive to park it will get stuck in neutral again. I cannot put it in park or get the key out unless I manually override the shift knob again.

Here are the clues;

* Dashboard indicates "Gear Selector Service Required"
* Shift knob gets stuck in neutral but can be overridden manually
* Car operates perfectly fine otherwise. I can drive around town as long as I manually override shift knob when it gets stuck in neutral
* Dashboard matches the position of the shift knob perfectly
* I heard a click under the shift knob when I put my foot on the brake while the car was in park before problem but I do not hear the click any longer.
* I can put the car in reverse without depressing the brake.

What parts do you think I need to replace? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I had this problem on my 2007 S40 like 5 years ago. It ended up being a wiring issue. I would start by removing the cover and looking underneath the shift lever and inspect the connectors/wiring to see if anything is loose or damaged. you would be lucky if that was your issue, if it is not, the next best thing would be if it was the GSM itself. I am not a mechanic or car expert, but I did have this same issue in the past and that is where I started.

In my situation, I was not so lucky. Signals from the GSM are routed to the Transmission Control Module via the engine compartment wiring harness. it turns out that there was a pin that was damaged on the TCM. It happened to be the pin that the GSM signal comes in on. it is unlikely that you have the same issue, I just thought I would share a horror story.
