Transmission problem after big snow storm code 232

Post by hanzbe420 »

Hey guys 94 volvo 850 turbo here. I went out in a bad storm. While i was getting gas, i saw a lady stuck in the snow spinning out and i had to help her. But i was also checking my break fluid and i got side tracked and left the hook latch open only by latch, so much snow got in there and everything was wet. Anyways after a bit of driving and getting stuck a few times and i know i over heated the transmission and then got the flashing arrow of death. Now this was after getting stuck a few time and i no i Abused the transmission getting it out, but i know it's still good. Anyways. I got code code (232 Speedometer signal missing) so i looked it up and im pretty sure i need this part(the small black part with no wire). The code read as speedometer signal missing, but i think its called a diff name to. Anyways i think its the picture with the black part with no wire. On the diagram its number 37, and the other part with the wire is number 5, so basically it runs, starts up and drives, but as soon as it drives for a while, it gets hot and arrow comes on and the only way to get it to go is to restart the car, but then it only goes like for a min and gotta stop pull over, and start it back up. But if u let it cool down, say 20 mins, Its good to drive for like 20 mins or more lol. So just wondering if anyone had this problem before or has advice. And no its not the pnp. Its def one of the two pictures of the parts i posted Thanks all.

Just a thought, but have you made sure to thoroughly de-snow /dry everything? Water and old wires are not good friends.

You may not have overheated anything but just gotten trans warmer than normal. The speed sensor 37 is a trouble prone part. I am pretty sure the 232 is that one and not the speed sensor up on top of trans. The speed sensor on final drive case can make speedo work but the waveform is not high enough voltage for the TCM to read it. When the wiring in sensor gets hot it is more resistive and the signal voltage range goes down.

No i havent its really cold out i got a upper respiratory infection and i wont be able to do that for a couple days at least. But it threw code 232 (speedometer signal missing) so I'm trying to figure out which of the Two parts i posted, is the part i gotta change. Cause i was gonna take it out clean it off and put jt back in and see if it fixes the problem.

So which one did u say it was the #5 part im diagram or the # 37. Or if u look at the pictures i posted is it the small black amd red paer with no wire or the other one that has a grey wire with the plug? And if its the one that is black and red #5 on diagram without a wire, where is it located because i can't find it, or find any pictures or anything. So if it is that part can you please show me a picture of where its located.

37, it is on the very back end of trans. Right by the steering rack. It has no wire made on it. The wiring harness has a two socket connector and the sensor has the two round pins with the trans harness plugging into it..

So basically the black part with the red o ring i posted with the two round pins with no harness coming from it??? Or this other one?

There technically both transmission speed sensors, but each picture has a description of what exactly each sensor is. And you said it was on the back of the transmission near the rack. I just did pressure hose on the rack and two small hoses that go from rack to rack. I dont think i saw this sensor. When i was looking from atop the engine i saw a big plug, so i know i was close. But thinking i probably gotta go from underneath. Thats the last question i wanted to ask where is the best place to go through to access this sensor.
