Hello,
I have a 1986 740 GLE with a dead battery. I changed out the battery but as I started to reconnect it the ancient alarm system started going off. Honestly I had no idea the thing even worked, but now I can't seem to disable the system. I believe it is preventing my car from starting. When I open the door the horn(now disconnect) starts going off and the lights flashing. I've done a large amount of googling but can't seem to find anything related to the alarm system in this car.
I can take pictures of the system if need be. Any help is appreciated as I'm at a complete lost for what to do.
1986 740 GLE alarm/ immobilizer issue
I ended up figuring it out and wanted to post the solution here to aid anyone else who might run into this problem.
So when I changed the battery I tripped the genuine OEM trademark 1985 Volvo anti burglary system. Apparently the only way to deactivate this system is with the accompanying key fob. But since its from the 80's the key fob is apparently just filled with magnets.I don't actually know because I've never seen one. So if you are lucky you may be able to solve this by waving a magnet in front of the little sensor that has the led sticking out of the top. (I wasn't)
What I ended up having to do was pull the panel under the steering wheel off. There I found the "alarm system". It was a box with 10 or so wires going into nicely labeled holes.( They actually show you a picture of this in the lackluster instruction manual.) Anyway one of the wires is labeled "ignition lock" and another labeled "imm. relay". I assume imm. is short for immobilizer. I removed the wires by unscrewing a flat head screw on the side that was holding them in place and then touched them together which made an audible "click". After that I was able to start the vehicle.
I hope this helps anyone who might stumble upon this problem. I had no idea changing my battery could cause this to happen.
