A cheap car or an expensive ornament?

Hi, Thanks for looking at my post. Happy New Year

I purchased a 2001 Volvo V70 T5 2.3ltr for cash in November 2018 because I need a car and cannot afford the exorbitant car loan rates or 20% plus annual percentage rates.

The car had been looked after and the engine had been replaced less than 30k miles ago. The car was not running so I knew it was a bit of a gamble and I was aware that I would end up with either a cheap car or an expensive ornament!

The previous owner of this 2001 V70 T5 said "This car became hard to start at times and began cutting out intermittently and now won't start at all.

The engine was replaced 3 years ago and has only done about 25k miles since the replacement.

Sometimes when I try to start the car, it seems to misfire and other times it runs smoothly for a few seconds and then cuts out.

I do notice that when it starts, just before it cuts off, the dashboard lights get slightly brighter which I think means that there is a bad electrical connector or relay.

I put an ODBII on the car, but it does not show any problems.

So far I have tried:

1. Draining some of the gasoline out of the tank and putting some new gasoline in, so what is in the tank is a mix of old and new.
2. New fuel pump.
3. I measured the fuel pressure at the cylinder head and it is good.
4. I changed the spark plugs and ignition coils.
5. I replaced the Crank Shaft Position Sensor.
6. I checked the fuel pressure at the cylinder head and it reads a steady 50+ psi.
7. The battery voltage holds well at 12.5 volts until I have had several goes at starting it.

Fuel pressure looks good.
Check for 12V at the main relay for power to the foils and fuel injectors.
Check compression, warm, throttle body open on all cylinders

At 200k miles the Throttle body, if original, is way past it’s expiration date, they typically last 150 miles. You can have a look inside. It with a mirror to see how clean it isn’t, too.

Hats really poor running once it starts. Look for induction leaks in the big fat hoses that run from the air cleaner box to the turbo,then over top the engine , the from the radiator/ intercooler back to the engine to the throttle body.

By “ Look” I mean remove everyone, clean thoroughly, and flex and inspect and look for cracks and splits. All the connections have to be tight.

I've had cold start issues caused by a bad Engine Coolant Temperature sensor. Have you tried starting with accelerator held to the floor? If not, give it a try. What have you got to lose? That is potentially diagnostic of a bad ECT. If you end up changing the ECT, put in a new thermostat as well.

Engine block ground wiring being worn can also cause start issues.

I'm going to piggyback what a abscate suggested, I've actually experienced this in the past on one of my 4 V70XC's that I use to own. I had visually inspected all turbo induction hoses but the tear was in an area that couldn't be seen without removing the tube. The symptoms you mentioned were identical to my experience.

I have not been able to locate a workshop manual for the car snd looking online I cannot find information about the fuel injector relay location. I guess it is in the engine compartment somewhere...

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
