Oil in Coolant (AGAIN) NEED HELP!

Post by Brooke »

 15 months ago I had my '98 Volvo V70 T5 serviced due to oil being in the coolant. The prognosis was an intercooler problem...radiator and hoses were replaced. Last week, I had the same thing happened except this time they don't know why. They pressure tested the radiator ($315.00 later) the radiator is fine. They pressure tested the block. Fine. The mechanic says it just might be residule from 15 months ago (at volvo dealership). Residule 15 months later...I don't think so. My engine was completely dry. No oil registered on the dip stick. Anybody out there that might have some ideas? My car is still under an extended warranty for 2 more months. I want the problem solved...right!

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I had a problem, twice, with oil in the coolant overflow reservoir. The Turbo model (mine is a '94 850T) has an engine oil cooler built into the radiator. We replaced the radiator, cleaned out the overflow reservoir, and there was indeed a little bit of oil that came back to the overflow reservoir, due to incomplete cleaning of the cooling system. Then, a couple of months later, there was again a large amount of oil. Took the car back, they found that the new radiator was defective, and replaced it. This was all done before a 1500 mile trip that I had planned, so I lost confidence in the "fix" due to the second major oil leak, and did not make that trip. However, it has been two years (and 25k miles) since the second radiator was installed, and I have never had another bit of oil in the reservoir. So, it was indeed a faulty radiator the first time they fixed it, requiring a second "new" radiator.
