VOL-FCR DTC comms OK, but not service light e.t.c.

Post by jellybear »

Hi all,

I am fiddling around with a VOL-FCR 1.3.6 combined with a off-the-shelf VAG-COM cable on my 1998 S70.

I can access the features in the "motronic 4.4" button, read diagnostic codes from the car e.t.c. without any particular error message.

But some om the other functions in VOL-FCR, such as resetting the service light, fail. There's a time out error message saying that the car does not respond and that I should check if the ignition is on (which it obviously is since communications under the motronic 4.4 menu work fine).

Any idea on what has gone wrong?

Most likely you are experiencing timing issues. VOL-FCR is fickle about the COM port setting and the cable.

Go to Device Manager and try slowing down the bit rate for COM 1 to something under 9600.
You can also try playing around with the the buffer sizes.

VOL-FCR works best with FTDI based cables. The cheap CH340 based cables have more problems.

Your have better luck with 850 OBD-II and a good ELM327.

I thought Vol-FCR was for USA 1998 S70 and European 1997 S70. Your location is Sweden. Your Year and Model is 1998 S70.

Should you be using VIDA as your primary diagnostic software (with appropriate hardware) to access the ECUs which you haven't gotten Vol-FCR to communicate with?

Which of your Sweden 98 S70 ECUs communicate successfully with Vol-FCR?
Which of your Sweden 98 S70 ECUs do *not* communicate with Vol-FCR?
