Hi all.
I'm a new Volvo owner. Purchased my 2004 V70 in December and it went a week before things started acting up.
Here is what happened:
-Felt a violent shudder almost like I hit something.
-Brake and ABS warning lights turned on.
-Speedometer, tachometer, and temperature gauge all stopped working.
-Message screen displayed “BRAKE FAILURE STOP SAFELY”.
-Trip odometer displayed only dashes.
-Odometer stopped at current mileage.
-Gear indicator stuck on “D”.
-Noticeable loss of power (limp mode?) where I would have to press the gas harder than normal to get the car to move. Felt like the transmission was slipping.
-Rear defrost stopped working.
After getting the car home I shut it off, gave it a minute, and started it up again. At that time all the above symptoms had gone away but the message screen read “ENGINE SYSTEM SERVICE REQUIRED” and the orange warning triangle was illuminated.
Since then the same malfunctions listed above have occurred several more times with one addition:
During a couple instances the message screen has read “TRANSMISSION SERVICE REQUIRED”
The CHECK ENGINE light has also turned on.
Based on everything I've read on this forum so far I pulled the CEM and sent it up to XeMODeX. Today they notify me the CEM passes their bench testing but that doesn't mean it isn't the problem.
So, I'm looking for opinions and advice from the group.
Do I go ahead and let XeMODex send me a cloned, upgraded with heat sink CEM or do I have them send back mine and keep poking around?
Thanks!
2004 V70 2.5T CEM or something else?

Have you scanned for codes with a proper scanner?
Have you tried the on-board diagnostic test to see if all your modules are communicating?
Could be a bad battery/connection or another ground point location.
Report back.

Unfortunately I jumped the gun and removed the CEM and shipped it off to Canada before checking any codes or looking at the on-board diagnostics. I don't own a proper scan tool but have been meaning to add one to my tool collection. I think I can find in this forum instructions on using the on-board diagnostics.
The battery is currently disconnected but I'll make sure the connections are good when I hook it back up. I wouldn't begin to know where to look for bad grounds.
I'm going to do some more research and thinking but it sounds like it may be a smart idea to have XeMODeX send it back and I'll do some more diagnostics.

Hi all!!
Thought I'd take a minute to thank everyone for their input and update the group on my problem. After receiving my CEM back from XeMODeX I reinstalled it and the problems with the car got exponentially worse to the point where it wouldn't even run. So I had it towed to my mechanic. He spent some time with it but didn't have the specialized Volvo tooling/software required to get to the bottom of it. So I had it towed to the nearest Volvo dealer. Volvo stated the TCM was somehow offline and they found dirty contacts at the throttle body. They cleaned the contacts both at the TCM and throttle body and I'm back on the road. I've driven roughly 120 miles since the repair and nothing has resurfaced so far except for the check engine light which came back on less than a quarter mile from the dealer. That's a problem for another day right now.
Thanks again!
