2009 V50 2.4i Timing Belt Replacement

Post by SSaxman »

Long time reader, first time poster here. My wife has a 2009 V50 2.4i and this site has been very helpful to me over the last few years so many thanks in advance!

As I said, I’m working with a 2009 V50 2.4i (B5244S4) with around 110,000 miles on the clock. I want to replace the timing belt and I have encountered some conflicting information throughout my many Google/forum searches and was hoping to get some help. I’m no ASE-certified mechanic, but I’m no novice, either.

The timing belt seems like a pretty straight-forward procedure. Line up the timing marks on the cam gears with the timing cover as well as the mark on the crank sprocket with the timing mark on the block, pull the belt, replace idler/tensioner, reinstall ensuring timing marks are still aligned, torque everything down, and call it a day.

Here are my questions:

1. Is it necessary to purchase the camshaft locking tool (like this one https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... -2864#desc) to keep the timing in check or can the belt be removed so long as the timing marks are all aligned? I’ve read about/seen videos showing both ways so I’m not entirely sure (like this article, for example https://www.matthewsvolvosite.com/volvo ... -gear.html). The tool I linked is almost as much as the timing kit and since I will probably only use it once, I’d rather avoid the expense if possible. I want to do things right so if it’s necessary, so be it.

2. What is the proper procedure to set the tensioner? The video here (https://youtu.be/IK_zH8g8Fow) shows that the tensioner adjuster is at the eleven o’clock position upon initial installation and then must be rotated counter-clockwise to the seven o’clock position. Is this the same for all models that use this tensioner, or does it vary by model?

3. What are the torque specs for the two idler pully bolts and the center bolt in the tensioner? I found this site (http://www.volvohowto.com/volvo-s40-v50 ... 2004-2013/), but it’s a little cryptic. It shows, for example, “Timing belt gear (camshafts with variable valve timing): Torque to 10 Nm.” Is this the tensioner? Idler? Cam sprocket?

4. Lastly, is there anything else I should be aware of when completing this procedure? Any tips/tricks from those who’ve done this before are welcomed!

Apologies for the book I just wrote above; I tried to be as to-the-point as possible. Again, many thanks in advance for any help!
