ODBII diagnosis

Post by shaolinpat »

I used to have 2007 S40 on which I'd use a Vida Dice to see what was going on with my car through the OBDII port.

Now I have a 1997 850. Is there any hardware/software combination that is equivalent to the Dice for 1997 models?

I've got a couple of diagnostic trouble codes that I need to address (P0300 and P1310), but would like to get a fuller picture of what's happening behind the scenes.

Vol-Fcr if it is Motronic 4.4
Flash code reader if it's Motronic 4.3 and earlier.
1997 850 T5 have M4.3 from the factory...so you will need flash code reader.

Do you have any recommendations on flash code readers?

You will need to make your own...i doubt that they are available for sale.
Few wires,1kohm resistor...a switch and that's it.
I have a scheme somewhere if you want it.

The AME '97 850 where equiped with Motronic 4.3 or Motronic 4.4.

He has already pulled codes ... that make it obvious that he does not need a flash code reader.

P0300 and P1310 have the same meaning.

P1310
5-4-3 Misfire emission level from at least 1 cylinder
5-4-5 Misfire three-way catalytic converter (TWC) damage from at least 1 cylinder

P0300
5-4-2 Misfire emission level from more than 1 cylinder
5-4-4 Misfire three-way catalytic converter (TWC) damage from more than 1 cylinder

You can look up the details for each code in VIDA. Search for the PXXXX code and get the conversion to the Volvo code, then search for the Volvo code.

As for a better code reader for your '97 850, 850 OBD-II. Read the details for the hardware requirements.

Overall the '97 850s were equipped either way sure, but that's a misleading factoid in the context of this thread: the 4.4 was on GLT and NA models. This post is about a US market 850 T5 and those shipped only with Motronic 4.3.

A flash code reader can report more for Motronic 4.3 than many code readers, it's easy to use and has its place. But 850 OBD-II is probably much nicer I don't know, I haven't used it.

You claim the US 850 T5 shipped only with 4.3 ... funny this comes from YOUR signature line:

Just to diffuse that... erikv made his into an M4.4 himself - made a 4.4 ECU for my '96 as well. :)

As for flash code readers, if OP wants to build his own, Ben850's version is probably the best I've seen. I made a mini version that plugs into the "OBD II" port as well, but Ben's is easier, sturdier and more practical. It's here.

Glad you find it funny! The main point of a signature line is to report the options your cars have and any configuration that is not standard, to facilitate discussion of/in a post. My 98 V70 also has a non-standard configuration.

There were no 1995 850s with Motronic 4.4, as stated all US 850 T5 cars shipped with 4.3. In the US P80 cars Volvo started shipping 4.4 in 1996 on the NA only, then in 97 on the NA and the new LPT-equipped GLT, then in 98 on NA and GLT/LPT and T5. This description lumps HPT and R models together as "T5" for convenience, though they are sometimes identified as T and T5, etc.

The Author of 850 OBD-II developed it on a 4.3 equipped car ('97 850 2.4 10V). It is only sometime in the last year that he gained access to a 4.4 equipped car and started adding the additional 4.4 stuff. It is a lot easier to use and one can do more with 850 OBD-II then one can do with a flash code reader. With 850 OBD-II one can reprogram the service light limits and test the gauges. Can you do that with a flash code reader?
