1998 V70R Slight Rod Knock and lifter Tick

Hello All,

I have recently bought a '98 V70R with 220k miles back in January. Earlier in February I was driving it after getting a substantial amount of service done to it already and something odd happened. Engine started misfiring around 3000 RPM so I pulled off the road and the engine had an obvious lifter tick. I had it towed to the shop and the shop replaced the O-rings in the oil sump and was able to tell that that was why the tick was caused. Under further inspection they discovered there is a small amount of rod knock as well.

I've heard that repairing the rod knock is nearly impossible to do on the cheap. I'm a poor college student and this is a little disappointing obviously. The mechanics shop said the obvious decision is to pull the engine and drop in a new one. My question for you all is: Is there a reasonable way to rebuild the lower end? Will the engine need to be pulled? And is this something I should take upon myself or just resell the body for as much as I can? I do not have a lot of mechanical experience but I would like to whatever I can to keep it. However I'm not sure if the 4k price on the engine replacement is worth it. Thoughts?

*edit* It should be noted, the body is in excellent condition as well as most of the other mechanical parts. As well has had a new turbo installed just of 2000 miles ago.

What do you need from this car .

If you keep your foot light you can drive an engine with a loose rod for a long time, I think 2 years was my record

You can get a used engine for about $500 and 15 hours to put it in for a first timer.

That’s cheaper than a new beater and a new set of problems

The R model is “ coveted” so it’s worth having it running, it’s a $200 scrapper if not running

That is an easy one as the pan is not hard to remove and FCP has rod bearings for $50 ish. The oil pan is sealed with Anaerobic sealer and the rod bolts are reuseable.
You won't know until you remove rod caps if the problem is minor and it requires cleaning crank and rod installing new bearings. If the bearings did the big spin and scored rod and grooved crank then it is over..
