V70 98 trans dipstick question

Post by Jamvo »

So I recently went it do a drain and fill to find the top of my trans dipstick was broken off. After some fighting I got it out, and idiotically set it on the edge of the bench, it ended up getting snapped and I’m pretty sure I lot a piece, I tried to piece it together but it broke in a few places. I am just trying to figure out the correct length, couldn’t find it in the forums or Haynes book, I think they no longer make them but I ordered a new one anyways, was planning to compare it to the old but that’s no longer possible. I have the end of the stick where I can mark the proper lengths for hot cold, but how long should it be!? Thank you so much. It’s a 98 v70 awd 2.4t auto trans

Does your dipstick have one O-ring or two O-rings on the handle?

Just one O-ring is the old style Dipstick.
If your new one is two O-rings it is the new style Dipstick.

Look at the last two inches of the Dipstick Tube:
If it is all the same diameter, it is the old style.
If it changes to a larger diameter for the last inch or so, it is the new style.

A new style Dipstick will not fit into a old style Dipstick Tube.
A old style Dipstick will not seal in a new style Dipstick Tube.

It has been a long time since I see the old style for sale, I'll almost bet you will need to change the Dipstick tube also.

For the transmission? Good to know. That looks like the oil dipstick, but I get if it’s the same concept for the trans too. Thanks

No.

Rick has been posting here about the engine oil dipstick, the trans dipstick is completely different.
