Service light mystery

Post by Danonly55 »

I took my first long trip in my 1996 850, After arriving at my destination My service light would light up after restarting the car and last for about 30 seconds then go out ?? All fluids and filters are good ,fresh and clean. Any Ideas what may be going on. My OBD is not showing any faults.

Are you sure it's the check engine light and not the service light?

In North America it will say CEL which is Greek for check engine light. No foreign letters allowed on dashboards here, we build wa λ λ s to keep them out.

strange, did you also check for pending faults? its a different check in the menu. but I doubt thats it. something odd in the transmission or ECU or wiring would seem most likely. I know that doesn't narrow down much.

Hi,

My 'service light' comes on every time i start the car and stays on for 2 minutes then goes out. That is normal for my make/model/year.
For my car i have to buy a 'tool' to plug into the ODBII connector to turn off the service light but for yours you may be able to push some buttons in a certain sequence to get it to stay off. For me i dont mind it coming on anymore and actually like to use it for a warm up timer now. The check engine light is a different light though and that comes on when something is wrong with the engine/system/etc.
The 'service light' is just there to remind you to get an oil change or something like that.

You should have taken a picture when only the light you are talking about was lit not when all of them are lit as then it is impossible to tell for sure which light you are talking about. Maybe it was the dome light :D
I’ve been driving a Volvo long before anyone ever paid me to drive one.
That's probably because I've been driving one since 2015 and nobody has offered to pay me yet.

It is defiantly the service light, It does exactly what yours does, But it just started doing it. The car runs fine. I will leave my OBD reader in and use my 850 OBDII reader app and see if can pick it up. " Dome light" thats funny !
