Tint on XC-70 rear windows removable?

Post by XXCC »

Hello,

I live in a city famous for "smash-n-grabs" and having tinted rear windows on a wagon is a great invitation for a break-in.

I'm looking for a 2005-07 XC-70 with no window tint. While I've found a few, I'm mostly coming across what appears to be factory tint on the rear passenger and hatch windows.

Is this factory tint, embedded in the glass, or is it removable?

See below for reference. Any thoughts are appreciated!

Blue - no tint.
Silver - factory tint?

I believe it’s imbedded in the glass - that’s how mine is. I hate how dark ours in, and I love that blue one.

If it has aftermarket tinting you should be able to see, and feel, the upper edge of the film near the the top edge of the rear passengers door windows.

Xxcc...MDK here. So.. from the 2 pics you posted, the first one is factory. The silver is aftermarket tint. Here in Ohio junkyards I've never seen "factory tint" as dark as the silver one. Not saying that it's not possible... but I've never seen it. To remove the tint we use a steamer, the kind you use for stripping wallpaper. Apply to the inside of the glass panel .. evenly and make sure that it is hot enough to pull the film ... slowly as to not damage the antenna or defrost strips. Then I used paint thinner to remove the old adhesive. I did this to my 1998 850 R wagon way before I joined up with this forum. Even with patience and caution... you may still wind up removing the defogger or the radio antenna. MDK

Thanks for the info MDK.

Ok, disregard the silver photo. I agree that’s pretty dark.

How about this one, is this a factory tint? And if so is it removable?

Thank you!

It looks like a light tint. What I would call 80% .. it allows 80 % of the light to pass thru. All factory tint is embedded in the glass... not possible to remove. Remove one of the rear trim panels and see if it has film on it. There's only 2 ways about it,,, unless they sprayed it with something.. which I doubt. But now ..in these days ..who knows. Eh .MDK

You can always add a light tint film I would guess? Volvo didn't apply embedded dark tints to my knowledge (except perhaps the one at the top of the windshield, mine is green-ish)
