Hi I've recently brought a 2001 volvo s60 and noticed that coolant would leak everywhere when the engine would stop I took it to a mechanic and was told that it needed a new water pump and timing belt I gave him the good ahead to fix it a couple of hours later the mechanic rang me and said that when he went to start it the engine wouldn't kick over and said the engine is stuffed and would need to replaced it seemed like he didn't want to work on it and said exactly what 2 other mechanics told me that volvos are difficult car's to work on well 2 weeks before I spent $1430 for it to pass a roadworthy test I really don't know what else to do if anyone's got some advice it would be much appreciated

most of these cars are sold due to head gasket problems. perhaps you should stuff the person who sold it to you. If you decide to get the new head gasket (ill-advised) you cant just use any mechanic. It has to be a shop that knows Volvos or you will have paid for a learning experience for your mechanic. (about 2000 usd) one false move or aftermarket part and its for nothing. These cars are not affordable unless you do the work your self and have an extra car to use during downtime.

I agree, he didn't get it right. Puts a belt on and the engine and it locks up. Engine should still turn over if it was just a head gasket right? Sounds like the valves hit the piston and he doesn't want to make his mistake right. Correct me if I'm wrong, but VVT engines use a special cam lock tool?
Problems like this is why I use the Volvo dealer service department. My sister lost her 2005 S80 T6 to a bad mechanic getting preventive maintenance. The car drove in fine came out destroyed. June
