My sister drove our Volvo to town when it all over sudden stalled. I had to tow it home.
the engine compartment had oil all over and the dipstick was pushed up. I tried to see where the oil would be coming from but couldn't see immediately.
So I wanted to turn the engine over, which it did very reluctantly. Checked the battery and it was almost drained empty???
So I charged the battery overnight. I took of the cover from the spark plugs and timing belt to see if the oil was coming from there, but by the timing belt was no oil.
With the charged battery I could turn the engine over, but it wouldn't start. It actually sounded a kind of strange. Checked also the fuel rail to see if fuel pressure was there and it was ok. Because I recently had trouble with ECU I re-seated it, but this also didn't change.
And now it would also not turn over the engine any longer.
Where should I take this from here?
Thanks

Hi pjcat,
You didn't mention about checking the oil level. The PCV could have been blowing oil out of the dipstick for sometime and finally emptied the oil pan. If that's the case the engine could be shot. When I purchased my first Volvo for $500 , a 98 S70 T5 it was spewing oil all over the place from the dipstick that it needed to be towed. Check the oil first.

No there was still plenty of oil inside. It didn't look like a lot went out, the level was still at the full mark.MoVolvos wrote: ↑25 May 2019, 00:53 -

The engine won't turn over at all? Are you sure the battery is still good, although it does not explain the oil issue?

If the battery is more than 5 years old, running it down probably killed it.
Battery first
Fuel pressure has to be checked with a gauge, not just a guess
Oil problem is plugged PCV, about a 4 hour DIY job

My guess is an overheat causing excess crankcase pressure. Cranking while overheated is harder for the starter due to tighter tolerances between pistons and the bore causing quicker current draw and a flat battery. Check coolant system for pressure retension after warmup. Look for leaks.

If you can get the battery charged up and the engine to crank over, I would pull all of the spark plugs and check compression on all cylinders. If it’s blowing oil as bad as it sounds it may have a holed piston. Rate occurrence, I know, but.....

the only thing that will blow oil out the dipstick is valve made a hole in the piston due valve breakage, or timing belt skipping putting a valve through the piston, or head gasket blew through to an oil galley. over heating and PCV blockage would only cause vapor out the dipstick. Plus it sounds funny when turned over so that cinches it. Ide check the timing marks before a compression test. turn the balancer clockwise until it's big mark on the pulley face lines up with the front timing belt loop and then check the cam marks on the upper cover. you don't need to try and see the elusive marks down on the crank cog. just the big one on the face of the balancer.
The battery is only 2 years old, still good. What is not good is the coolant: the reservoir is empty, so I checked the upper radiator hose - no coolant inside, so I checked the lower radiator hose - no coolant inside.
I charged the battery once more fully just for checking; with the full battery I could turn over the engine again. But it became clear to me by listing the way it sounds and how hard it is for the starter and the fact that there is no coolant present, that the engine overheated.
RIP

That's interesting. Do you think there was a head gasket leak going out the tail pipe for sometime and finally overheating? Pjcat did not mention any coolant in the engine bay but the upper and lower hoses are empty? You think it would overheat when before the radiator emptied?
