engine not sitting right in engine bay
Hi all, this has been baffling me for a few weeks and no amount of muscling parts around seems to be resolving it. I'm in the midst of dropping a 2002 motor into my 1999 V70 T5 and the engine refuses to sit correctly in the bay. It sits cocked at a slight angle (clockwise as viewed from above), and it seems separately to be shifted to the right by 3/4 inch or so. This doesn't sound like much but it's enough to make it impossible to install engine mounts without forcing them. I was able to force the mount behind the front right wheel into place but it ended up tearing the rubber and ruining the mount. The trans mount under the car is also stretching quite a lot to get the bolts installed, so I'm not going to force that. (The top mount attaches just fine.) The two mounts that take the engine's weight look and feel perfectly healthy and are bolted into the correct holes on the subframe and steering rack.
Has anyone else run into an engine not sitting right in the bay? Are there differences between the 99 and 02 motors that I need to account for here?

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
Check all the mounting points for the engine are exactly in the same place. You may find the mounts are physically different including where they sit on the block.
There was a crank pulley mount change around 98/99 years which are not interchangable. Remember you are trying to fit a P2 motor into a P80 so there may be subtle differences. Lower torque mounts are also different for AWD and FWD in P80's.

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
I'm looking for what those subtle differences might be. All the mounting brackets from my old motor bolted straight onto the new one so I'm not sure where there would be a mismatch. Unfortunately the old motor is gone so I can't compare them in person.

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
Per the page linked below it seems like all you'd need to do in that corner of the motor (see item 1E on his list) to swap an RN motor to an 850 is install the old-style bracket. This suggests that the mounting points on the block are in the same spot, and since I was able to swap the mount from my old 99 motor onto the 02 motor, I'd expect the engine to drop into place just fine. So something else is up but I can't for the life of me figure out what.

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
I think I would focus on the front engine mount ( passenger side of car)
I have a part in my stock and can send measurements if that will help
I know there are two parts on this with about 1-2 cm difference between them

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
I actually have both parts, lol. The discrepancy between them is in the front/rear axis: one of them has the mounting holes farther forward on the subframe, but in the same position laterally. Not sure what the intended applications of the two separate mounts are, or why I ordered a replacement for the one I have but got the other.

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
Still stumped. Anyone have any experience with this? I'm probably like $200 into replacing engine mounts and the engine is still crooked.
I've now replaced every mount except the one under the transmission and it still isn't sitting right. I did replace the steering rack, which the rear mount bolts to. Are there year-to-year variances in the steering rack that could affect my motor positioning? Is the S60 rack similar-but-different in such a way that they could be mistaken for each other by the vendor I bought it from?
I also installed a set of sway bars so I did have the subframe loose, but the engine is pretty much only located by the subframe so that shouldn't matter. If the subframe were somehow misaligned the engine would still line up to four of the five mounts.

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
We dropped an '01 motor into a '97 855 and only had to change the PS mount to the later 9480189 (Like your car uses), and I left the bracket that was on the '01 engine in place, as the N motor one did not work.
We also needed to replace the front mount engine bracket with one from the 99-00 cars, which is the one you should have.
The isolators were replaced as well with parts for the '97, which should be the same as your '99.
You're replacing an RN motor with an RN motor, so you should just be able to use the stuff from your original engine and drop it in.
The steering rack you used is the only variable. A cursory glance at a couple pics show that they *might* be able to mix them up, but they are not listed as interchangeable. The 93-00 P80 cars all use the same rack. The 01-04 cars use a different one.

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
I apologize if I missed it in a previous post, I just scanned over the thread, but are the engine mount brackets sitting on the studs on the main front and rear hydraulic mounts?
The rack is something to consider... have you changed that?

Re: engine not sitting right in engine bay
Yeah, this is what I'm worried about. I ordered that rack a few months ago so I'd have to check with the vendor if they tanked it and sent me the wrong one - a little Google Image Search shows they look awfully similar. Also removing and replacing the rack is an enormous pain in the butt. I foresee another few month's delay on this.
I do have the rear and front mounts installed, and have replaced them both with Lemforder and Hutchinson mounts respectively. This is a manual gearbox car so they aren't hydraulic.bmdubya1198 wrote: ↑Sun Jul 21, 2019 7:24 pmI apologize if I missed it in a previous post, I just scanned over the thread, but are the engine mount brackets sitting on the studs on the main front and rear hydraulic mounts?

I did swap the rack out with a rebuilt unit from Jorgens.
