rear cv boots

Any advice on removing the rear axles on an 02 V70 X/C? I tried removing them a few years ago when I did not own the car. They did not want to come out and; it was not my car and the CV boots were serviceable, so I let them be. Now it is my car and the front CV boots are being replaced, so I imagine the rears need replacement too. I did yank on the axles fairly hard the first time I tried removing them and am looking for advice on how to get them out without damaging anything.
