Is every XC70 a turbo? I think it is...

Post by RocketUSA » Wed Sep 04, 2019 8:53 am

I've got some good experience with a 2002 S80 and 2004 V70, but what I can't quite pin down is if every second gen XC70 (2000-2007) is a turbo. I'm pretty sure it is, which brings me to my next point: in my research, I've learned that the turbo Volvos have potential for transmission issues, since the transmissions mated with those engines really were never intended to handle a turbo. The XC70 has a "low pressure turbo" option. Are these low pressure variety ok to run with the standard transmissions, or am I just setting myself up for failure?

It is easy to get a very biased viewpoint from internet research, as the people who come seeking help are those who have failures.

The 2001 Volvo is "known' for having transmission problems but that probably means a 10% rate rather than 1% failure rate - I wouldn't hesitate to buy a clean 2001 if I could start it cold, run it up hot on the highway, and it shifted fine. All these issues were put aside in the 2002-2007 years, these are solid.

I believe all P2 generation XC70s are turbos, correct.

The manual and automatic transmissions are made by AISIN who makes them for several car makes - if someone says Volvo transmissions aren't as reliable as Japanese ones, they are showing their stupid spots.

I believe in the heavier XC90 line, there is some truth in that the transmissions were overtaxed in the T6 badge with the 3.2 liter engine, but not in the XC70 line.

The T6 used a GM transmission. Which does not seem to have a bad rep in the configuration that GM used in their cars.. later the same six speed that was used for the P3s came along, not sure for which engines though.

Other than that I haven't really heard anyone blame failure on the torque and power. It seems to be more down to luck. Especially since non turbos also have the same occasional issues. Besides over here most late Xc70s were diesels and the transmission seems to be able to handle their extra torque just as well.

While there, the AWD on most of these will no longer work if it wasn't already repaired. It was not the turbo the problem, the 01-02 transmissions were more fragile and had a setting switching them in N while waiting at a light, which didn't help

JRL topped the list of transmission problem scientists. 2001 V70XC is a super hero car among XC70s.

To give credit, Jim was clear that if a 2001 ran well and had the neutral stop removed, it was a winner.

Im sure he saw his fair share of duds at wholesale though.
