Oil Anti Drain Valve for the P3 -- 3.0T and 3.2 Topic is solved

I wanted to share what I know about the anti drain valve that is under the oil filter

the black rubber disc is what hold the oil in the housing when the engine is turned off.
If your black rubber disc is missing or damaged then it is time to fix it.

And the last picture

For this picture I did the following

1. I drained the engine oil without removing the cap for the oil filter (waited 20 minutes for the oil to stop dripping)

2. I placed the measuring cup under the oil drain hole

3. I opened up the oil filter housing

4. I measured how much oil is held up by the anti drain valve (look at the picture)

700 CC is a lot of fluid

If your anti drain valve is broken (it was broken on both of my 3.2's) then the reading on the dipstick isn't correct

This seems to also imply that on your car, you should change the filter first before draining the oil correct?
That way any oil held in reserve is now in the pan to be drained with the oil.

I don't have a P3 and have always changed my filters after draining the oil and putting plug back in. my cars (s70, honda accord, toyota sienna) all use a complete filter and not just the cartridge.

It is possible that Volvo used the same anti drain solution on the T5 that they used on the 3.2 and 3.0T

Any canister with element oil filter on any of the engines using it, from IH/Ford 6.0/6.4 to Mercedes to Volvo, all should have the oil filter cap unscrewed and then oil is drained, all of them have the drain valve that closes a drain once the cap pushes the filter down. once you finish the oil drain the new filter is installed last. That filter style allows greater capture of waste oil and filter element can be squeezed to get the majority of oil out of the paper filter. recycling the metal spin on filters requires cutting them open to get paper element out and that is expensive. It was either proposed law or was made in law in some European countries so any manufacturer selling vehicles there did that filter on engines sold in that country. The Schrader valve fittings on fuel lines that Volvo had in two places for a few model years were for suctioning gasoline from the fuel line so fuel filters could be changed with no loss of fuel. When the filters went inside tank, some not serviceable without pump, they dropped the Schrader valve on some and left it on others for test port.

Thanks for that explanation.

It makes sense.

The engineers should be aware that filling the oil filter housing every-time the engine is cold started is detrimental to engine life.

Now that we have determined that the anti drain valve is a critical feature I have two comments

1 - The reason I started this thread is to raise awareness that this critical feature can fail

2 - I need to know where to send my complaint to the Audi engineers that solved this problem by turning the housing upside-down (which makes oil filter changes a messy experience)

Volvo 4,5,6 cylinder "white" engines have that problem. Some engines of some makes with bottom mount have a drain plug for filter so the filter can drain before you removed it. The Volvo DriveE 4 cylinders have a filter drain on their bottom cap.

If you change your oil on your 3.2 or 3.0T and you fine one of these then your anti drain valve is broken
