Bought a brand new air mass meter, 89 740 turbo 171,000. car doesn't run bad, recently bought car and just decided to change to new parts. (cap, rotor, wires, plugs, fuel filter, air filter, oxygen sensor, tps switch, over drive selonoid, air mass meter etc...)
when i buy a used car I'd rather change what I can to eliminate problems down the road.
all runs fine untill I put on the new air mass meter, car will idle and thats about it, it won't excellerate, it back fires, runs real bad... put back on my 14year old one, car runs good. is the computer only able to work with the old air mass meter, poss. only reconizing the information it is use to reading???, should I disconnect the batter for a few days, maybe let the computer shut down, reboot or something and let it start up with the new air mass meter, I just don't get it... number match from the old one to the new on??? it's the right part... it's a new one, not a rebuilt... any one else ever come across this problem?
Air Mass Meter Problem
Not all new parts work correctly, it definitly sounds like you have a faulty new MAFS. There is no need to do anything when replacing teh MAFS other than plug it in, just making sure all connections are clean and tight.

I have a 940 and recently required a new Air Mass Meter. When first installed the car would not behave itself stalling, bad idling etc etc and was advised that it was due to the on board computers adaptive memory. Once the batt was disconnected over night all problems were solved and the car was running like a dream. I was sceptical this was going to work but it really did.

Man i hope this is my problem. I had to replace my Mass Air Meter as the little wire inside it broke. I replaced with a re manufactured one. It didn't run right afterwards and the I found a big hole in the air tube between the MAM and the throttle body. I replaced it and it still doesn't run right. It seems to have gotten better over time but not right. I am going to try disconnecting the battery. If that doesn't work I am taking the MAM back to Auto Zone and swap it out.
