Hi Chris

Sounds like a speaker magnet. But could be wrong? The dash board speakers by the a pillar are known for losing their magnets.

It is the coil magnet from the dashboard mounted speaker.

This happens to just about every Volvo.

Pull the dashboard speaker out (very easy to do) and, if the cone is still in good condition (i.e. not stiff or torn), reglue the coil magnet back into place with a good glue.

However, I think I would replace the entire speaker with a new one. (OEM, eBay, etc)
There are only two types of car owners - those who own Volvos and those who wish they did.

I glued mine back on our old 850, 3 years before we sold the car and the speaker worked without issue and the glue held fine. Folks over at Swedespeed.com laughed at me and called me cheap.
Hey, I don't care. I saved the headache of having to look for a new speaker and I could hear no difference between the speaker I repaired with that didn't lose its magnet.

One thing that annoys me about Volvo is that they (and Sweden) are so Earth conscious, that everything that can be, is biodegradable.. Plastic, rubber, glue....

Can't agree more with you Luketrash. The door and dash control knobs on my S70 are reacting to the oils from hands and fingers and are slowly melting away. Though I shouldn't hold my breath, the speaker magnets have yet to fall off.

Correct.

When you pull the speaker it will look like this:

I didn't even try to fix mine, I just replaced them with some 3 1/2" Infinity speakers. (better glue!)

Here is how they came out:

and it helps you from having to hear all the assorted little sounds that you can never find the source for... :?

Back on topic - just glue the magnet back with a good adhesive or replace the speaker.
