OBDII protocol for new volvos

Post by ljsommar1 »

I just purchased "UltraGauge Blue". It is an OBDII adapter which interfaces with a phone or tablet.
I got it to report things like coolant & trans temperatures, boost, current gear, ect for my wife's 2020 V60.
I cannot get it to connect. It reports - "error OBDII protocol unknown -1:6".
Has anyone had any experience with OBDII bluetooth adapters with a new Volvo.
Does anyone have info on Volvo's OBDII protocol. All I can see so far is that it is listed as "CAN".

Of course, I am trying to resolve my issues with UltraGauge but I am always amazed at the help available here.
Thanks for any info.

Are you trying to connect with a cheap $20 bluetooth dongle? Try Car Scanner EDM. Otherwise you might want to get a more dedicated scanner like blue driver or something similar. You would have to invest in a good obd computer such as the Autel Maxidas DS808, or again, get a Bluedriver and see how it goes. We can't exactly help on a brand new 2020 V60, I believe there's another section on this site.

The device I purchased ($79) is not intended to work as a scan tool by me but rather as a gauge set. I do not like that there is no temperature gauge. I also would like to set up a trans temp and boost gauge and perhaps a trans current gear indicator.
Normal OBDII adapter dongles don't have that capability.
Yes, I am aware that there is another section dedicated to the new SPA models. It sees little traffic and I thought my question about OBDII protocols might be applicable to other models or some of the experts here have some applicable knowledge/experience.

I had called my dealer (Keystone Volvo) with this question. I wasn't expecting much but I was pleasanlty surprised. The service manager informed me that Volvo has an onboard firewall that may be blocking communication. He emailed UltraGauge and then spoke to someone there and even contacted Sweeden about my problem. He is waiting for communication back from them. Talk about going the extra mile!

I am not the original purchaser of the vehicle but it was previously serviced only at Keystone before we bought it and I was not impressed. I could see the tracks of the techs on there work. Looks like things may have changed in 10 years, or so I am hoping.

Success! After guidance from UltraGauge I got the unit working. I now have an old iphone used as a gauge, iI set it up to show coolant temp, boost, voltage and instantaneous MPG.
Apparently I messed things up. After the unit would not sync with the V60, I tried it on my sons car and confused the unit. All is good and I would recommend UltraGauge. There online support was very good.
