No need to remove crankshaft pulley?

Post by darrylrobert »

I had a practice timing belt removal on my parts 2002 2.5t xc70. First i tried to remove the large centre bolt but that thing is very tight (probably seized), it was then i noticed two 10mm bolts holding some type of cover around the back of the pulley, the timing belt was easily removed after sliding this said cover out.

I hope my 2.4t 2001 xc70 is the same so despite what the Haynes manual says there is no need to remove the crankshaft pulley on a P2 car to change the timing belt.

Also i noticed the water pump had some pink sealant on the gasket?..is this factory sealant or should no sealant be used on the water pump??

Impact and locking the crankshaft ( requires starter removal ) are the good tools for the big (30mm?) crank pulley nut.

You should also cook that for 60 seconds with a propane torch, let cool, soak threads with pb blaster, repeat. With an impact, that usually gets it.

That’s an impressive bend on the socket extension.

There is no need for all 2.4 or 2.5 engines, but it's not always that easy to pass the new belt because there are several very tight passage points, it's important not to force twist the new belt too much so as not to damage the internal fibers www.youtube.com/watch?v=2tljxoQFDe0
