That spring behind the mirror

There is a wire spring behind the glass of the side mirror (s) - what is its function? Mine is about ready to break off.. Thanks

Good question. Maybe it keeps the mirror more steady when driving at speed - otherwise it may be slightly vibrating which would cause the image to be blurry.
