94 940 turbo-spinning noise and stall engine

Hi,

My 16 year old son has a 94 940 turbo sedan and in the last day he has heard a noise in the engine that sounds like a spinning wheel noise like a pulley spinning freely. The engine did stall and started back up and I was able to drive home 2 miles. I checked the service belts and they appear to be ok.

I am wondering if the sound could be coming from the timing belt or a tensioner for the timing belt. I am going to pull off the timing belt cover tommorow and look around. Any suggestions on what to look for ??

According to the receipts from the previous owner, the car is due for a timing belt replacement. It was replaced at 150 k and it has 214 k on it now.

I have no experience replacing any timing belts and to be honest I am a little intimidated. Is this something a weekend type mechanic do on his own or is this something better left to a professional mechanic ? For what it is worth, I was able to replace the turbo and radiator on this vehicle last year and it is running fine. so, that is a measure of my abililty.

Does anyone have any other suggestions on this type of noise ??
