98 XC Power steering fluid preferences

Post by CIK7 »

I read a thread about power steering fluid on here. I have to replace the pump because it somehow got damaged during my accident on may 2nd. The manual states Volvo ATF only. The thread I read said (haha) Mobil 1 dexIII. The manual also says Volvo ATF for the transmission. A preference for a couple people out there is the Toyota TIV ATF. Can I use Toyota TIV in the power steering with no issues? How much fluid does the power steering need? I found a good deal on it. I need to drain and refill the transmission too.

The Toyota TIV is an Aisin product equivlant to the 3309 ATF and not the Dex3.

I believe you can also use the Volvo Pentisin fluid but you cannot mix it with ATF.

Thank you. The Volvo parts dept at dealer said DOT 3 power steering fluid should work. Is this true?

No one uses the term DOT 3 for transmission fluid. The term is used for brake fluids DOT 3, DOT 4 or both. The 98's should use DEX III.

I've used Havoline (EDIT: Full Synthetic Multi-Vehicle ATF) in the following for full flushes:

03 Lexus GS300 - Transmission, Powersteering
03 S80 T6 - Transmission, Powersteering
03 Odyssey - Transmission (Honda says their Fluid Only), Original Transmission w/230K

No I'm referring to power steering fluid, not ATF.

Should work????
NOT TRUE!
Don't go to them and don't listen to them!

Owners manual says ATF(red) for power steering.
Later models use Pentosin, which can also be used in P80 BUT you MUST flush power steering system first... because they are not compatible.

I believe the 98 calls for DEX III (transmission fluid) in the powersteering so the Havoline covers the DEX III (EDIT: which is) for the transmission also.

I use to have a 98 S70 T5 which was purchased with around 230K miles. Used DEX III compatible transmission fluid and flushed twiced without issues. It was coffee colored and after 1 year flushed again with no issues. In 2012 used a turkey baster to removed the old powersteering fluid, circulate and removed till is was clean. This is before seeing the video above.
