Loping Idle

Post by Kate97 »

Hello,
I have a 2006 S60R and it starting loping while idling and driving. I will check the fuel pressure when I get my hands on a gauge and clean the throttle bottle and IAC when I get a chance. I have just under 149xxx miles and am about to replace the head gasket seal and spark plugs.
I'm just curious what issues you guys have found when the engine started loping. Thanks

Welcome Kate

Usually a vacuum line has gone soft or deteriorated when idle gets funky. Component failures usually cause a system failure which trips an engine code. You don’t get “this part is bad’ information from codes , but ot narrows it down to a a small number of things which you then test.

Head gasket is major work and 149k unusually early. Do you know it has cylinder head leakage?

Sorry of this is all known or written at wrong level

Hey, thanks for the info. I will check for vaccum leaks.
I know it's popping codes, but I'm not sure which ones because I don't have a code scanner myself.
I dont know if a cylinder itself is leaking oil. I have an oil leak and the head gasket is where it's coming from.

Head gasket replacement is not likely needed if you have an oil leak. A head gasket leak will more likely get exhaust gas or oil in the coolant. Or coolant in the oil pan. Something else is leaking for your oil leak. Can you get a photo of the leak and post here?

Most parts stores will scan basic codes for you. Volvo specific codes may take a higher grade scanner.

Sorry if you knew this.

While I intend to get the full DICE/VIDA laptop diagnostic setup in order to work with the Volvo car computer units, and for its great real time diagnostic graphing, I have found the Torque app ($5 for Android phone) and a cheap blutooth adapter ($10-$30) for the diagnostic port (https://www.amazon.com/s?k=obd2) under the dash has been critical for my 2006 S60 (non-R) ownership.

I can scan for codes, get an English text description and make a reasonable assessment of the urgency. You can also clear the codes and so turn off the check engine light.

The system can see and display on gauges in real time, engine coolant temp, LTFT, STFT, MPG, boost and vacuum, O2, volts, MAF, AFR (measured and commanded) and quite a bit more. It also had the emissions readiness controls so if you clear codes, it will let you know when the several emissions systems are fully ready to pass emissions inspection.

Currently I have a check engine light on, but the code (P2402) is "P2402 OBD-II Trouble Code: EVAP Leak Detection Pump Control Circuit High" does not appear to be an urgent problem other than new faults won't turn on the check engine light as it is already lit (of course). The car cannot detect an EVAP leak while the the control circuit is stuck high, but I can live with that for now.

I get intermittent faults and I can use the Torque app to check them out and to clear the CEL and see if it returns. This has been needed for a bunch of transmission issues which typically clear up within a day (P0600, P0700, P0863).

Getting the codes read at an auto parts store will be more immediate than waiting for shipping :) but this is handy for the next time, too.

These are tough engines to locate leaks but the culprits are

Oil filler cap...will leave oil all over top of engine. Looks like a head gasket leak.

Loose Pcv tube on top....same

Camshaft seals ..will drip oil all down front of engine , on passenger side. Hard to see because buried behind plastic

Turbo return drain tube oring...sprays oil all over right side of engine , on firewall side of car.

Loose oil filter/plug

Rear main seal...good mews $5, bad news $1500 in labor

Oil pan seal

If the car is chugging on you here and there, one very common failure item on these cars is the fuel pressure sensor. You can be certain from the stored code. I never checked fuel pressure when it went bad on my car, not sure if that will be diagnostic. If you figure out this is the problem, it must be replaced with Bosch sensor, e.g. https://www.fcpeuro.com/products/volvo- ... 0261230110 or this is a great junkyard part because so many different Volvo's use it (see "fitment" at link above).

Be careful with part numbers on that FPS. There is a chassis break in the XC90 line I remember working shockwave, so order by VIN.
