98 V70 xc engine weight and recommendations

Post by CIK7 »

first of all I might shop around for an engine hoist so I can pull out the engine from my 98 XC. I can't find the engine weight on Google and I know this is a great place to ask. I would like to know how much the engine and transmission with angle gear weighs.
second part of this is recommendations. the lesser sibling to my 98 XC is the GLT. I want to know if the added angle gear adds friction to the transmission. I also want to know if a newer angle gear (P2) can be fitted to the 98. if I do this I will want to do a manual transmission swap. I've seen Roberts swap video and the thread on here. I am assuming that a front-wheel drive uses the m56 and the all-wheel drive uses the m-66. will I want the tranny computer from the donor car? I understand that the all-wheel drive weighs about 250 pounds more and someone told me that there is a loss of power as a result of not only weight increase but friction from the drive shaft. advice please. since I already have with all-wheel drive I probably want to keep it because I've been wanting to take it out to the three off-roading parks near me. my plan is to get an 850 wagon and make that my super car. by the way I found a great deal on a Volvo near me. will update when I get it.

As the title states.

The wife's 855 is going to get it's engine swapped (Slight HG leak and engine getting tired at 275K miles). The replacement is sitting on a skid weighing just about 325#.
The plan was to drive the wagon to work and just load it up in the back to get it home. I would think it should be OK, as I bet many get loaded down with MUCH more weight (passengers and cargo).

Removing it will just involve the engine hoist.
I’ll swag an AT at about 400 pounds, so 700 total

The 1 or 1 1/2 to crane from Horror freight will be fine.

You will need that for the M56 - it mounts above the driver seat. They are expensive so most people take it out of the car when they park it so it doesn't get stolen. A bit of a pain but it isn't brain surgery.

I believe

M56 FWD
M66 AWD is correct

I don't know about adapting the angle gear to the M56

M56 is the 5 spd. M66 is a 6spd

There were FWD and AWD versions of each. Looks like the P2Rs got the 6spds. Non-R P2's got the 5's.

Your post is kind of confusing.

Are you wanting to pull the engine from the XC and put it in an 850? And then adapt an AWD P2 set-up to it?

well my XC 2.4 engine locked up. I want to either replace it with a rebuilt 850 2.3 engine or rebuild this engine myself. In the meantime I'm going to buy a running 850 because I need to have out-of-town transportation. I want a high performance Volvo. because of minor drawbacks on the 98 XC, I'd make an 850 my super car and use my xc as backup and off-road toy. can anyone recommend a place that can provide a rebuilt 2.3?

Just do a built FWD 850 and install a Quaife differential.

You can find a JY LPT engine pretty easily and drop it in your XC. Even a P2 LPT works fine. You just need to make a couple considerations for the N vs RN engine differences.

N RN?
From the Wikipedia page
In 1998, with the introduction of the 1999 model year S80,[35] Volvo began to transition to updated versions of their N-series engines,[36] now called RN,[37][11] short for revised N.[38] Drive-by-wire, coil-on-plug systems and variable valve timing (VVT)[39] were introduced along with new engine management systems.[39][40] 10-valve engines were slowly phased out in favour of detuned 20-valve versions.[41]

With the introduction of the second generation S40 in 2003 another update to the engine family took place. The new engine was called RNC,[42][43] the 'C' standing for 'compact' to emphasize the decrease in overall dimensions. Compared to the previous generation the new engine was 200mm slimmer[nb 2] and 25mm shorter. On turbocharged engines the exhaust manifold and turbine housing were now combined into one part; all engines were equipped with plastic intake manifolds and continuously variable valve timing (CVVT).[44]
The RN engines remained in production alongside the RNC engines and were slowly phased out, beginning with the introduction of the second generation S80 in 2006. The new SI6 engine family[45] was introduced to replace the 6-cylinder variants of the Volvo Modular Engine at the same time.[46]
I *think* the RNC versions of the 5-cylinder started in 2008.

The '01 LPT in the wife's car had COP and exVVT on it. I just installed the distributor from her old engine and left the VVT unplugged when we swapped things.
We have a flashable '98MY M4.4 ECU in there, but I have a bin from VAST that we can use to add COP and activate the VVT (When I get around to it).

If you're on SS, there is a thread on the car and some of the info on the swap.

no my 98 is an N model. The RN started rolling out about 6/98 or 7/98, which is what they badged as a 99 year model. I want to avoid the RN engines specifically for the reason of additional electronics listed above. I don't want CoP or DbW. if I could, I'd buy a 97 or older 850 for sake of being able to buy and program my own remotes for the keyless entry. something I will never do on my xc because 98 was when they required dealer programmingand I'm not blowing $200+ on a remote
sorry got off track there.
