Seatbelt service or replace xc70

Post by darrylrobert »

The rear seat belt isnt retracting as well as i think it should and looks it has been jammed in the door a few times.

The fix is to wind the coil a few extra turns, but taking the seat apart is a major pain.

An inside out zipper ..

The actual seatbelt recoil hidden inside the seat can be unbolted and serviced.
Left side is the annoying rollover lock, right side is the spring loaded recoil.

The seat latch come off with two bolts. Turned out i didnt need to remove this.

The plastic seat release, i can see why this breaks easy. Theres a plastic clip under the belt that needs to be pried up and off before removing this panel.

Thanks for posting. I'm actually looking at doing this myself. My rear passenger side belt isn't retracting very well. Just curious do we consider this a safety issue? Looking at your post above doesn't make me all that ambitious to do the job. Is there any stitching required or is it all zipper-based work?

Much of my time during the job is spent hauling things up and down the stairs to the basement or in and out of the storage shed, or running back downstairs when I realize I need something else,or taking a break from standing out in the sun,or using flashlights or work lamps when it gets dark.

If the seatbelt sits loose on the passenger then yes its a safety issue.

There is no stitching to be removed, start from the bottom/ underneth then the side zipper and all will unfold and make sense. The recoil spring is quite tricky. theres a round aluminuim ring/key that is the trick to winding it up placing back onto the seatbelt. I used a small vice-grips to hold the key while turning the case.NOTE: it took me several attempt and alot of swearing to re-tension the spring and im not sure its working any better.

Oh man... that stinks. I'm thinking it might be better to grab a belt from a junk yard then? I remember having to fiddle with the tensioners when I installed my 3rd row seat in xc70 and let the belt retract "too far" into the reel. Then I had to disassemble like you and retension the spring and curse and swear about it for hours. I've found the website SafetyRestore as well.. I'm wondering if they have the capability to fix Volvo belts like this.

EDIT: Looks like that company can actually repair our belts. Something I'm willing to pay $80 USD plus shipping premium to do so that I don't have to muddle around with the damn spring again. Question regarding removal of the belt: would it be possible to remove just the belt reel mechanism without removing that explosive cylinder for shipping? Apologies if it's a dumb question I've just never really worked with this sort of belt before. Answer: The reel/pretensioner are a complete single-stage assembly.
