If this has been addressed, my apologies. I’ve looked but haven’t found anything, and I’m on my phone.
The long version is: excessive rain, when moving the car into the driveway I took a little water over the engine I think... I ended up cooking two cool packs. Multiple cylinder misfires and I ended up changing the #3 and #5 coil. While I was there, I replaced all plugs, kept the iridium. After the car finally started and ran smooth, I noticed, in the first drive a weird winding noise. I thought a bearing was going out somewhere. Turns out the vapor/oil(I believe that’s what it is called) separator box diaphragm failed. It’s the diaphragm behind the oil filter in the same assembly. This caused a crazy amount a vacuum to develop in the engine and it was sucking air past the cam seals at the timing gear. I replaced that and the noise has dramatically reduced. I still have an excessively loud engine. I which I could describe it better, but it’s just loud. The engine is smooth and has a ton of power, but it’s like having my ear against the engine block when it’s idling. If our 04 C70 is idling beside the 06 S40 T5, you can’t hear the C70. There is a very small amount of vacuum in the engine, I notice it when I take the oil fill cap off. It still sounds like it’s sucking air past the cam seals, but I don’t notice vacuum like before. I have checked all of the vacuum lines I can find in the engine compartment, I don’t have any leaks. Man I hope this is making sense.
Is there something to look for to stop this? Has anyone had this happen before? My 17 year old daughter drives this to school and work. I don’t want to leave her stranded somewhere.
HELP!

Perhaps there is water in the oil?ktklobe wrote: ↑17 Jul 2020, 19:18 If this has been addressed, my apologies. I’ve looked but haven’t found anything, and I’m on my phone.

Use a Ear Trumpet to isolate where the sound is coming from. A transmission funnel works well as a Ear Trumpet.
This is a good idea. Never seen one like this before.

I had a loud noise coming from my S40 engine. Turned out to be the diaphragm in the pcv oil trap that was broken. It is around $25.

PCV housing is clear. Granted there is some buildup, but on a scale of 1-10, I’d give it a 1....Not what I hoped to find, but still a good find I suppose. Time to button her back up, flush the remaining oil and then time for a fresh oil change.
There was still enough vacuum in the engine to try and completely suck a rubber glove into the head....prior to pulling the housing. I guess we’re going to have to learn to ignore the loud idle, or smoke the engine
