Buying a 2006 XC 70........maybe

Post by Blacklab467 »

Just finished looking at a super minty XC for a really good price. 220,000 kms on it, drives nice although previous owner's son ran the brakes to metal on metal on the front so will need those. When I drove it the brakes seemed really weak and he mentioned something about the mechanic said it might need a new power brake booster also.
The previous owner had it for 12 years and maintained it well but let his son drive it for the last year and he neglected the brakes.
He had the angle gear replaced 3 years ago and the AWD works well, I tested it.
My big question is the CEL is on and when I check DTC's with the turn signal stalk there shows codes set in about half of the modules, including the CEM and DEM and various others. Is this fairly normal? My XC has about the same number of DTC's set but its kind of a beater. I'm thinking of buying this one for my wife so it has to be a good car.
I don't have the ability to scan with VIDA other than taking it to a shop.
I don't want to miss a great deal, guy only is asking $2500 for it but I don't want to have to fix a whole bunch of potentially expensive stuff also. Input and comments would be greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Seems pretty good to me.
Under $2k USD for an under 140k P2 Haldex AWD XC that’s had the BG replaced sounds fine. Brakes - Zimmerman rotors and Akebono ceramic pads should run $300ish & is about the best setup without changing calipers etc.

ViDA is definitely intimidating, but not so bad once you’ve had some screen time with it. Usually can be had for under $100.

I’d be willing to bet the majority of those DTC’s are stored/non-current (but totally worth checking out).

Just be wary of the single hood strut on those 06’s. Or wear a helmet whilst under hood.

Many of these look super mint in and out - but that has nothing to do with suspension or other wear. Weak brakes may be a problem with air inside the ABS unit. A corroded DEM is expensive - 15 years in Calgary winters do that - and may cause a non start. So bit of a gamble. Still, at $2500 IF and only if he already replaced the front struts and control arms - look at the bushings, it may mean he did take care of the car so it may be a deal as a beater without putting money into it. You get tons of perfect brakes at the junkyard for pretty cheap. You also must check the PCV (use a piece of Saran Wrap), otherwise it's over $1000 fix in Canada. Remember, we are in Canada so $2k for a 220K km car is an average price (fellow US owners actually pay 2-3 times that)

Thanks Oragex, I did the Saran Wrap test and it sucked in, also did it on my own car after I watched your video. OEM struts are on it and the original LCA's in decent shape. Really clean underneath ( it was originally a BC car).
The message centre says 4CS(?) service required and a headlight bulb is burned out. I did a little research last night on the brake issue and I'm pretty positive is needs a booster and certainly front rotors and pads. As I said from the test-drive, the AWD works really well.
I'm going to offer him $1800 today and go $2000 max. Even if it eats $1500 in parts I think it is a very good car with reasonable mileage.
BTW; I've come full circle on using aftermarket parts on Volvo's. They just aren't any good! Plus there's plenty of really good XC 70's in the boneyard around here lately that are almost completely untouched. After putting way too many aftermarket junk parts on my Black car, I'm now changing things back to serviceable OEM stuff from the boneyard.

Is this XC70 blue in color?
I thought only the Ocean Race XC70's had the 4C shocks, but I could see an amply appointed standard one having 4C. Look at the struts very closely. If they have wires going to the bottom of the "shocks" it is 4C equipped. These are very expensive to replace, even cutting out service charges by doing the work yourself.

For example...

My suggestion would be to decipher how many of the 4 are truly bad and base your purchase decision mostly on that. If you're looking at $15-1600 in shocks, that's a disappointing thing.

If they are leaking, they are almost always the source of the 4C DTC.

I am sure you could replace the 4C system with standard, but you would need to spoof the module so you don't have to see a DTC all the time.

Well, I missed it anyways. Someone else scooped me! No it was a nice light metallic green with tan and brown interior. Oh well, it seemed like a pretty good car for the price but I wasn't looking forward to doing the brake booster and whatever else it might need.
